"It's safe, Seth!" I called to him over my shoulder, hoping I was right.
I gazed into the black, choppy water, legs shaking. It crossed my mind briefly that Cassius could be behind this, but what other choice did we have? If we died in this deteriorating building, we wouldn't be helping anyone.
"There has to be another way," he said, his eyes begging me for a different option.
"We can't go back now! Even if we could get out, we wouldn't survive in the city," I countered.
He looked out and up, trying to catch sight of our visitor. I took his hand gently despite the urgency of the situation.
"I can't lose you again," I sighed as our eyes met. His blue irises swam with confusion and shock, yet he nodded anyway.
Without any warning, he grabbed Eden and myself, holding me closest to him. He launched us into the open air, the rain soaking us instantly. I squeezed my eyes shut, holding his hand tighter.
We impacted the boat, causing it to drop into the water for a frightening moment. My face was buried into Seth's chest, which resulted in me landing on top of him while Eden's grip slipped from my arm. The pair of us scrambled into sitting positions.
Seth quickly found the small motor and attempted to start it while I turned to Eden. He laid limp, half of his body out of the boat, his face being washed over by the waves.
"Eden!" I cried, yanking him fully into the boat.
Water spilled from his mouth as he coughed weakly, not even putting up a fight for his life anymore. He collapsed into me, his chest heaving up and down as we bobbed in the waves. The motor roared to life, a small contribution to all the noise surrounding us.
We leapt across the waves. I fought to keep my balance and keep Eden from giving up completely. Rain slapped me in the face, chilling my bones. The flashlight illuminated our faces.
"Hey, stay with me, okay? We're still alive--" I started, trying to keep him conscious.
He groaned and tried to pull out of my grip forcefully. I held onto his forearms tighter, throwing a glance at Seth. Thunder clapped from above; lightening set the sky on fire. I caught sight of the narrow exit, out to the supposed open ocean.
Eden continued to attempt to tear away from me. I whipped my head back around to see his face contorted in pain, feeling him fighting me. His fingers dug into my arms as he jerked helplessly, as if he were stuck in a nightmare; eyes closed tightly, head toward the ground, whole frame shaking.
What kind of torture had he been put through? For what cause? I knew his parents had worked with Cassius, but surely he couldn't be so angry that he would damage their child.
I wanted to shout at him to stop, but I knew it wouldn't help anything. Jonathan was helped by human contact, and that remedy wasn't curing Eden.
At a loss of what to do, I just held him upright and forced myself to look at the prison we had just left. It was in the distance, far enough to where the alarms were lost within the space between.
One moment the structure was there, the next it was gone. It collapsed in on itself, half of it falling into the crashing waves. I looked up as we entered the gate, sped through the exit, and shot out into the uncharted territory.
