I made good time to the dojo and when I walked in, I noticed a surprisingly lack of classes. I don’t think I’d ever been in the place without people practicing.
“There you are!!!” Nana shouted as she greeted me. The girl came bouncing over to me, arms full of steamers. Hyori wasn’t far behind her, trailing a cloud of balloons.
“Whos, what exactly is going on here?” I asked both of them.
“A letter was sent here for Tao! From the international Apprenticeship Program!” said Nana.
“What? Really? What did it say?” I asked again.
“We don’t know, silly! Tao has to open” Hyori replied.
“If we don’t know what the response is, why are we decorating? What if it’s a rejection?” I asked them concerned.
“It’s not to the rejection-acceptance round yet. Getting this letter just means he got to the next stage.” Hyori continued.
“I don’t think I understand.” I said.
“The program only accepts one person every four to five years. It’s a ridiculously long process. Basically, there are five rounds to go through, and this was a letter for the forth.” she paused and Nana continued, “If he hadn’t progressed to the fourth round, they wouldn’t have sent him anything."
“Really? You can get to three rounds in and they’ll just never message you that you’re out? Well that’s weird.” I said back.
“But we all knew Tao would get it!” Nana said.
“Alright, well I can see the need for decorations then but what did you need me for?” I asked both of them.
“Oh yes! We wanted you to help us pick out which ones to use.” Hyori said to me.
I take a good five minutes to think it through, “Balloons are fun and easier to clean up!” We all shared a giddy laugh, then want about decorating the dojo.
I even met the dojo owner that I had heard so much but never run into before. He nodded approval at our efforts, before excusing himself to pick up his grandchildren. When were done with decorating, Nana was squeaking.
“OMG! Miyoung just texted me, Tao’s on his way.” Nana squeak.
“Quick! Get the blindfold!” Hyori said to me shouted-whispered. We scrambled, running to grab final preparations then head out to the front. We met Tao just as he walked into the gate.
He looked surprised to see us along with a crowd of other students that had helped.
“Is everything alright?” he asked looking concerned.
“Of course everything is alright! Why wouldn’t everything alright? Everything’s greaaaaaattttt.” Nana said almost breaking. Hyori let out a long sigh.
“Just wear this blindfold, okay?” Hyori said to Tao. The resulting smile across Tao’s face was truly ecstatic.
“The letter came, didn’t it?” he asked.
“Shooosh you, just put on the blindfold!” Hyori commanded him. He complied and we lead him up the stairs and into the dojo.
Once we’re inside, the dojo owner emerged from his office. Grandchildren clinging to is sides, he had a manila envelope in his hand. He placed it in Tao’s hands and gave him reassuring pat on the arm.
“You can take your blindfold off now!” Nana said excitedly. I’d never seen anyone move that fast. Within a second, Tao had torn off his blindfold.
