“Why should we grant Ms. Williams full custody?” the judge asked my lawyer “Especially given her previous history” he finished. “Ms. Williams has worked very hard over the past few years, to ensure everything will be in compliance for her son. Yes, given past experiences, it would appear that she was unfit, but there’s always more to the story. Her son had been sick with the chicken, and she took off from work, and as a result she lost the job she was working at the time. Her mother was on drugs, but she couldn’t leave her sister behind, and she didn’t want a child to keep her grandmother up at night. But, since the last time she was in the court room she has gotten another job, as well as a paid internship, and an apartment in which she shares with her sister, who she now has custody of” damn, my lawyer is good. She damn near has everybody crying over my story, I honestly didn’t think she would bring that up. “Ms. Williams what is your occupation, and where is this internship?” the judge asked. “I am currently the staff manager at DTLR, but I intern at the Dunwoody Crime Lab.” “How’d you obtain this intern exactly?” “Well I attend American Intercontinental University, as a double major student.” “What are your majors?” “Forensic Science and Homeland Security with a minor in business.” “Are there any permanent job offers in your future?” “Yes, in September I’ll be working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. I go to training in July.” “Do they know about this situation?” “Yes sir, I’ll be working the morning shift, that way I’ll be able to be home when Amir gets out of school.” “I heard you were taking care of your sister, how old is she?” “She’s 17.” “So you’re working 2 jobs, attending school, and you’re able to put a roof over you and your sister’s heads, correct?” “Yes sir.” “Does your sister plan to attend college?” “Yes, she’s received a full academic and athletic scholarship to Georgia State University, she’ll be attending in the fall.” “And she decided all of this under your care?” “My brother and I encouraged her, yes.” “Why did you feel the need to encourage her?” “Once our dad left us, our mother became a heavy drug addict and alcoholic, I wanted to give up at that point, but I had to keep going despite everything, and there were days where I didn’t do much, not even attend school, but I had my little sister who was looking up to me, and without even knowing she encouraged me to keep going, so I knew once she reached the age where she was able to understand everything, I had to return the favor and encourage her.” “Did you give up again once you lost custody of your son?” “Honestly, yes, but I quickly realized, me giving up wouldn’t help me get my son back, so I’ve been working hard as ever trying to make sure I don’t fail him, whether I’m granted custody or not. I love my son with everything in me, and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him.” “That’s all. Mr. Jackson, what is that you do for a living?” he questioned Aaron taking his attention off me. Ms. Love and I found out he was the one selling to Michelle, which is how he knew I’d lose custody over Amir, but since Michelle was his ‘best customer,’ he lied and said I was the drug addict. “I don’t have to work, your honor, my parents are two of the best lawyers in the state. That allows me to spend the quality time needed with my son” of course he knows how to answer the question. “Ok, do your parents give you cash, or is the money deposited into your bank account?” “Sorry to interrupt your honor, but my son doesn’t have a bank account” that statement caught the attention of everyone in the court room. “Are you sure?” Judge Banks asked. “I take the money from my parents, and deposit it into an account, to help reduce my spending” Aaron quick as hell with his thinking. “So, about how much would you say was in the account?” “Uh… probably somewhere around 25k.” “Young man, you are aware that you’ve given me a copy of your bank statements, correct?” “Yes.” “So, I’m going to ask you one more time, how much is in the account?” “I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t go too much higher than 30k.” “Ok, so where did the other 60,000 dollars come from????” this nigga got 90k in the bank and still living at home with his parents??? “Counselor, are you and the missus aware of this???” I looked over at Mr. Jackson, and if looks could kill, his mom would be planning a funeral in the very near future. “No, your honor.” “So, I ask again, what do you do for a living??” We were all anticipating the answer. “I’m self-employed, but you up here wasting your time questioning me, you need to be asking her about her run-in with the law” everybody’s attention went back to me, but my lawyer already knows about the expunged records from when I was about 15. I was fighting this girl, and she pulled a knife out on me, but somehow we ended up fighting over it, and next thing I know she’s laying on the ground bleeding, she ended up in a coma for a few weeks due to her blood loss, and I was brought in for questioning. The police later discovered it was self-defense, so the charges were dropped. “Counselor, what is this young man talking about?” “About 8 years ago, my client and a peer had gotten into a fight, the young lady pulled a knife on my client, and during the fight, the knife was turned to the young lady, and because she had loss so much blood, she was comatose for a few weeks. My client was charged with assault, but as the investigation went on, the police dismissed the charges because my client was defending herself.” “Does your client have a history of violent behavior?” “After a prolonged time of being provoked.” “What is your definition of ‘prolonged’?” “Weeks, maybe even months.” “In the last 4 years, have you had any problems that later resulted in violence?” “No your honor, I have too much to live for, and too much respect for myself.” “Good. Well we will continue this tomorrow morning, after we take a look at Mr. Jackson’s tax records from his ‘self-employment.’ The child will be in the mother’s care for the time being. Court adjourned” he said banging the gavel on his podium thing. I was excited! My baby was coming home with me. I actually cried tears of joy before we left.
