Author's note: I know my chapters are very short, but I am trying to write in that way to start off this story! After maybe a dozen chapters, they will get longer, but for now, this is the effect I'm looking for! I hope you enjoy my story :)

As I am standing on the stage, doing my best not to run away and report this whole ceremony to another day, I sweep once more the crowd with my eyes. I pretend I'm looking at all the people who fought alongside me or wanted me as they rightful king, taking it all in. I don't have the strength to do that. Instead, I look for familiar faces.

The first one I spot is Elane Haven. Her fiery hair stands out from the crowd, but what really draws my eyes to her is her face. As fake as mine, though I hope mine looks more authentic. The real face she wants to don is that of sadness. Despair. She wants to get on the floor and cry all that she can. Or kiss ferociously Evangeline Samos, to set herself on fire or forget the whole world. I don't blame her. I even wish she would do it. Then I could act offended and refuse to marry Evangeline, declare myself shocked of her behavior and not wanting to marry someone so openly in love with another person. Then Evangeline would go back to the Rift, living alongside Ptolemus and Elane, happy. Not that I want her happiness at all cost. But if I can't be with the girl I love, let at least these two live their love.

My heart tightens again as I think of what will undoubtedly come soon, my marriage to the princess of the Rift. I can already see little kids running around, their hair shockingly silver and their eyes blazing bronze, either wielding fire or metal. And I shake them away, because I don't want these children. The only children I want, I'd wonder all through my wife's pregnancy if their blood would be silver or red, and what kind of ability they'd have. They'd have mahogany-colored hair and bronze eyes, and they'd be as incredibly perfect as their mother.

But these children will never exist.

I look up straight, frowning slightly to look serious, ready to repeat the words the unknown man will say.

I've been preparing for this day my whole life. I can't break now.
