What is Cal doing? Does he actually think he can go and wreck this whole thing we've all been working on for months like that? Walking away now will only make everyone furious, the Scarlet Guard and Montfort because he is willingly leaving the kingdom up to riots and my father for backstabbing us all. Destroying everything now isn't the right moment, if there was ever one. If there was ever one, this is the worst. What he did won't solve anything. Now, cancelling our wedding would solve many things, but that's beside the point. Refusing to be king after having fought a battle to dethrone the one there before is probably the stupidest thing Cal's ever done. And God knows how many of these things he did.
I don't know why I do it, what pushes me, but I walk – fast – towards the podium my betrothed just left and climb the steps. I walk to the center of the stage, and clear my throat.
''Everyone! Please, calm down. What has just happened is for the most... unsettling, but I'm sure prince Tiberias will be back soon. He's probably just extremely stressed and distraught. Maven, though vicious and cruel, was after all his brother. He will come back to his senses soon. I'll go talk some sense into him. If he isn't ready today, we will be read for him soon. As the rightful king of Norta. Thank you.''
I survey the crowd for reactions, I see nods. Most agree with me. I don't see the lightning girl, but I wish I did. To tell her two things. One, please don't think he did that for you. Maybe he did, but there's a fat chance he didn't. Don't get your hopes up, he'll only shatter them. I don't know why I care about this girl anyway. But, strangely, I do. Second, please notice I am not doing this to hurt you, and I don't agree with most everything that I'm saying. If he's not king, there's no need for an alliance, and I get to stay home with Elane and Tolly at the Rift. I, too, want my love. And I'm not trying to steal yours away, lightning girl.
