Chapter 14 - Lucifer wears Levis

Patience had woken several times during the night to the sound of the shower running and an empty patch of bed next to her.  Despite this, she didn’t doubt that there would be enough hot water for everyone this morning.   There was something about his growling mutterings and the way his skin radiated cold each time he returned.

If tonight was any indication, this was going to be a long week for Josh.  Despite everything she couldn’t help but smile at this.  If nothing else it was flattering that he was struggling so much.

Her smile faded quickly to a frown when Josh rolled away from her and started muttering another girl’s name.  Of course this wasn’t about her.  As if this would be about her!   He was obviously thinking about some other girl.  And who the hell was Susan Boyle and did he really have to chant her name over and over again?

Patience rolled over in a huff and went back to sleep on the edge of the bed.  Unfortunately for Josh she didn’t stay that way for long.  It wasn’t long before she again snuggled into the curve of his back like she belonged there.  Once that happened there was no distraction that could calm him.  He groaned as her sleepy hand came to rest on his thigh.

“Susan Boyle, Amy Winehouse, Kelly Osbourne, Courney Love, that Hilton woman,” Josh chanted in vain as he closed his eyes and tried his best to ignore Patience breathing softly into his back.  He wondered for the umpteenth time how he was going to survive until Friday.

He was in the bathroom grumbling when she woke to the morning light, so she just threw on some clothes and left him to it.

It was Sunday morning and she traditionally made a huge stack of pancakes for brunch.  It was the one morning that they spent together.  She got out the ingredients and the bowl and started.  She had the batter nearly ready when the hairs on the back of her neck bristled.

She turned quickly to find Jake leaning against the doorframe.  His dark hair was a mess and he had dark rings under his eyes.

“Are you alright?”

“What are you doing Patience?”

Patience suppressed the cringe as he used her name rather than calling her Eth. “Making pancakes, I thought that much was obvious.”

“You know what I mean,” he growled.

“Can we talk about this later Jake, I’m kind of busy,” she flustered around the kitchen trying to look busier.

Jake grabbed her arm just as she was turning to put the flour away.  The packet fell and the flour flew in an arch before it hit the ground.  Patience ended up pressed against Jakes’ chest and completely oblivious to the mess around her.

“We need to talk now,” Jake’s grip tightened around her.

“I can’t, not now.  Saturday’s good for me.  How about we talk Saturday?”

“Patience...” he started to growl.

“Saturday Jake, you know, the day after Friday.  I’m flat out until then but...”

“Flat out?” he interrupted then his eyes shifted to take her in like he was looking for something then he lifted an eyebrow, “I’m sure you will be.”

“So Saturday’s good,” she ignored his snide comment and tried her best to look relaxed and unaffected.

“Now Patience, we will talk now.”

“Ohh look at this mess and I have pancakes to make.  Everyone will be coming down any minute Jake.”

“I don’t care.”
