"Nerd." A jock shoves me into a locker, causing me drop my books. I sigh, bending down to pick them up while everyone else is laughing at the daily reoccurrence. After I finished picking up my books, I turn to see Kim standing there while the rest of crowd had already made their way down to their next classes. Her face was a replica of a tomato.
"I'll kill 'em." She states. I burst into a fit of laughter; she looks so innocent that I couldn't help it.
"Kim," I pause to wipe a fake tear. "Don't. You don't need another detention on my behalf. Especially on the first day." I say, heading toward my locker to change my books. I hear her huff before coming up behind me. She leans against the locker next to mine.
"Hero, I have to look out for you considering your brother is never around when it happens." She points.
"Thank god," I whisper.
I love my brother but he can get carried away fast.
"The last thing I need right now is for him to nearly kill someone, Kim. Remember last year." I remind her, slamming my open locker. She flinched at the memory.
"Yeah, okay, I see your point. Brendon was in the hospital for the remainder of the year, getting thirty surgeries." She shook her head in disbelief. I grimaced at the severity in the injuries.
We started talking about nothing the rest of the way to the cafeteria. Once we were in line for food, Kim looked for an empty table. After getting our food we went to an empty table in the back, away from all the 'populars', which was of course in the middle of the room.
"I can't believe your brother still sits with them." Kim states, her voice laced with disappointment. I roll my eyes.
She had a crush on Ryder since third grade but refuses to talk to him.
"Kim." I send my best death glare in her direction before she even turns toward me. "He has friends, he's a jock, and has a line of girls wanting to be with him. Let the man be." I claim, and start eating my amazing poutine. She visibly sags in her seat.
"Fine." She drags out. I roll my eyes again.
"Are you coming over tonight?" I inquire, through a mouthful of food. She rolls her eyes this time with a ghost of smile on lips.
"You act just like your brothers." She claims, shaking her head. "And yeah, but I have get a ride home to pick up my stuff." She states. I shrugged.
"I brought my car today, I cou-" I begin before her squeal rings out interrupting me. I cover my ears.
"Thank you!" She exclaims before running out of the room as the bell rings for next class. I chuckle at her child like behaviour.

I pull up outside of Kim's house. Before the car is even in park she's out racing into her house. For what feels like the hundredth time today, I roll my eyes. As I get out and head to her house I hear a high pitched yell from behind me.
"Hero!" Kacy; Kim's 5 year old sister, screams and jumps into my arms. I grunt at the impact. I quickly hug her and twirl around with her laughter ringing out through the silent evening. I put her down when I start to get dizzy.
"Hey pipsqueak," I voice, using her old nickname I have her. She giggled at the name. "How's mom?" I question, squatting to her level. Her mom has been sick for the past month with some bad sickness.
"I had to stay home and look after her. I used that soup recipe you left here last time and it worked good." She replied. She looked behind me toward the entrance of their home. I look over my shoulder to see Kim's mom, Lacy and Kim standing there. Both wearing big smiles directed at us. I turn back to Kacy.
"Let's go inside before it starts to rain." I announce, looking up at the dark clouds taking over the sky. She nods desperately, gripping my hand as she runs up to her family. As we approach the doorway, I send a warm smile at Lacy. She returns it freely. I turn my attention to Kim.
"You ready?" I ask.
"Yeah. Bye mom! Bye Kacy! Love you!" She calls out, already on her way to the car. I say my farewells and I take off after her. I sit in the car while Kim loads her bags into the back and turn the keys. This will be interesting.
