Chapter 17 - Last Words

"So how did you get out of there?" Asked Christopher.

"Well, so you saw me on top of that large bookshelf right? Well, what happened is that a few minutes after you ran from the house there was something off in the distance that distracted the zombies. I couldn't tell what it was but I took advantage of that and was able to run out of the house." Said Dylan.

"It was that easy? Even if that did happen, what took you so long to get back to the base?" Asked Jorge.

"I can tell you guys in the morning but right now I'd like to get some sleep, ok?" Replied Dylan.

"Ok." Said, Christopher.

The three of them soon go to sleep. While they sleep Aidan's upstairs, wide awake. Nicole's asleep. Aidan wonders where they go from here. 'I thought we were safe.' He thinks to himself.

It's morning. About seven thirty. The sun's still trying to wake up. Aidan never went to sleep so he decides to head outside and see if everything's clear for when they leave. Dylan and Nicole are in the kitchen talking to each other. Jorge and Christopher are still asleep.

"I need to talk to you about something important. " Dylan says to Nicole.

 "What's up?" Nicole responded.

"I'm leaving this group today. We're all gonna head into the city and I'm gonna meet up with the guy who saved me yesterday." Said Dylan.

"Why are you telling me this?" Asked Nicole.

"I want you to come with me." Replied Dylan.

"What?" Said Nicole.

"Look, I don't care that you have a husband alright, I love you and I want you to come with me in this new group." Said Dylan.

"I cannot believe what I'm hearing right now." Replied Nicole.

"Look, at the very least think about it, ok?" Asked Dylan.

Nicole leaves the room and goes to wake Jorge and Christopher up.

After about a half hour they all head back on the road in search of a new shelter.

"Hey, how about we go to the old prison? I doubt anyone has claimed it." Says Jorge.

"Yea, that's not a bad idea." Replies Dylan. "We'd have to go through downtown though to get there."

"If we're quick enough I'm sure it'll be fine." Replied Jorge.

They head into the downtown area. They see zombie after zombie. After about twenty minutes they see a bridge off in the distance.

"If the prison is our goal then we gotta go that way. " Dylan says pointing in the direction of the bridge.

They walk another ten minutes till they get to the bridge. They all stop in front of it. A person runs past them going onto the bridge.

"We should follow him. " Dylan says.

Before anyone can stop Dylan he starts to follow the person who just ran past them. The rest of the group decide to follow Dylan onto the bridge.

The person stops running. They're about halfway to the other side. The group including Dylan stop as well. Dylan starts to walk towards the person. He gets within a few feet of the person but stops when they pull out a gun.

"Stop following me!" The person yells.

"It's ok sir. " Dylan says trying not to get shot. "Just...keep...pointing...the...gun...towards all of them. " Dylan says while slowly walking next to the person with the gun.

"Dylan? What are you doing?" Asked a very confused Jorge.

"Isn't it obvious? I'm leaving you all to die. Just like Christopher tried to do to me." Replied Dylan.

Christopher takes a step closer to Dylan. He ends up walking to where he's in between both parties.

"Look, you told me to run Dylan and I did just that. If I could've figured out a way to save you I would've." Said, Christopher.

"There was something you could've done. It's what my friend here did. He saved my ass back there after you left me to die." Replies Dylan. "Oh, you should meet him. Christopher this is Drew, Drew this is Christopher. He's the one going to kill you all. Well...All but one. Nicole? Have you made a decision?" Says Dylan.

"What decision?" Aidan asks Nicole.

"To come with me and leave your pathetic ass behind." Replied Dylan.

"I'm staying with Aidan." Replies Nicole.

"Fine, then I guess he is going to kill all of you. Go ahead, Drew." Said Dylan.

"Wait!" Yells Christopher. "In this world where zombies rule, it is up to us to survive together. We shouldn't be killing each other over anything. If the world is to be rebuilt then it starts with all of us working together, not against each other. Can we all just work as one? Put petty differences aside and look for a way to fix what has happened to the world. If we can't then w-" Christopher is cut off by the sound of a gunshot. Dylan had grabbed his gun a shot a bullet into the back of Christopher's head. Christopher drops to his knees. His body falls to the pavement.

"No!" Yells Jorge whilst grabbing for Christopher's gun.

Dylan and Drew run away to the other side of the bridge. Aidan tries to catch up to Dylan and Drew but can't catch up to them. Jorge kneels in front of Christopher's body, he knows he's gone. 

Jorge picks up Christopher's body and starts to head back towards the house they were in the previous night. Nicole and Aidan follow.

They get back to the house and Jorge starts making a grave in the backyard. About an hour after Jorge berries Christopher. Jorge, Aidan, and Nicole all stand over his grave. Aidan sheds a tear. Even after what happened he didn't want Christopher to die.
