The next day i got ready to go for dinner at Lily's. I was kinda very excited to meet her family and make new friends. She had told me that her mom was a teacher and Dad was an engineer. She had a sister who was 14, her name was Lucy. Lily also had a twin brother, Liam. I was excited to meet all of them.
Lily's dream was to witness a miracle. I didn't exactly understand what she meant by that but i wanted to make sure that she did witness one. Lily was such a sweet girl, she never hurt anyone and was always very caring. Her house was the one in front of my house(lucky!).At exactly 7 I got out of my house.
Before getting in I told to myself, "This is a start of a new journey, don't destroy it, live the moment". I rang the bell. Her parents welcomed me with a warm hug. Her mom reminded me so much of my mom. Her family reminded me of mine. A perfect family, loving parents and siblings. I wished i was in her shoes right then. What i once had was lost now. You never know the true value of something until you lose it. I learned it the hard way.
Well, i have to say her mom is an awesome cook. We had classic potato salad and pulled chicken pot pie. Utterly delicious! God i felt like never leaving. Her family was the best. They were really friendly and talkative. We talked about Lily and the funny things she used to do when she was small. We talked about my family. All through diner I was praying in my heart that we not come across a 'certain' topic.
But as usual, God didn't hear my prayer.
We were talking about dad and what he does. And then lily's mom, Dorothy Evans, asked about my mom. "So Emma, what does your mom do?" For a second i was completely silent. I didn't know what to say. I knew i couldn't keep it from Lily or her family for too long, so i decided to open up to them. I was ready to say, i wouldn't cry. I could trust them.
"Uhh, actually, my mom was a doctor just like my dad but....she uhh.."
"What's wrong Emma?" Lily asked.
"Lily, my mom, she died last week. We lived in Chicago back then but then we moved here to live with my grandmother"
Silence...
Lily and her family put their spoons down. I looked down. I thought i was gonna cry. But then Lily's mom held my hand and said, "You know what Emma, i truly understand what you've gone through. I lost both my parents when i was your age. They died in a car accident. I had a baby sister, even she died. I am really sorry about your mom."
But this time i didn't feel bad that she was sorry for me. I knew she understood me. And then Lily took her glass and said " to Emma's mom". All of us raised our glasses.
After dinner we played scramble. It was the most fun i had in a lot of days. I felt like one of them even if it was only one dinner i spent with them. All of them were just like Lily, sweet, kind, funny and caring. I didn't feel like leaving at all. I knew, from that day onwards my life was gonna change. Meeting Lily and her family was the luckiest thing that ever happened to me.
Time has a wonderful way of showing us what really matters
