As Brian started slowing down the car, I started panicking. From what I could tell, I had two options: go to dinner with him, or don't. It really was that simple. I was just making it out to be so much more complicated than it needed to be.
He pulled into a parking spot in front of a cosy looking restaurant, but let the engine idle in park. He rested his left elbow on the steering wheel and looked over at me.
I was sitting uncomfortably rigid, staring out the windshield. I already knew my choice, although I was having issues saying it out loud, or even just admitting it fully to myself.
When I didn't say anything, Brian cleared his throat. "Well Chief, what's the grand decision?"
I continued staring out the windshield stubbornly. The restaurant he parked in front of was called Wong's Sushi, with red drapes with golden writing hanging in the windows. I noticed that the lights inside were dim.
I sighed and ruffled my hair. "Well, we're already here." I turned my head to look at him and a grin played out on his face.
I noted the dimple in his cheek as he said, "So it's a yes?"
I rolled my eyes to conceal my curbed smile. I reached for the passenger door handle in an attempt to get out of the car and open the door, only it didn't have a normal handle so I just ended up feeling up the door with my palm and looking ridiculous.
I turned back to him reluctantly, ignoring his smile. "So it is a yes?" He asked smugly.
"It's not like I was given much of a choice. You drove me here." I replied.
"You still had a choice. I just gave you more time to make it."
I narrowed my eyes at him. He winked and clicked a button, both doors suddenly opening. I jumped a little and heard him chuckle and shake his head as he stepped out.
I scoffed and unhurriedly stepped out, giving a silent goodbye to the most beautiful car I've ever seen.
When I turned to walk around the car, I saw that the tow truck was parked a little way off, with my car still neatly strapped to its back.
I stood in place, staring at it. What was I going to do with that thing? Where would I find a decent, inexpensive mechanic at 9PM?
Nowhere. That was the answer.
Brian noticed me looking and casually said, "The guy said he's okay with waiting."
I turned towards him. His hands were in his jean pockets and the lights from the restaurants were illuminating his face. He had a good, casual poker face on, but I came from a family of liars.
"When did he say that?" I questioned, clearly remembering not witnessing any communication besides the thumbs up between Brian and the tow truck driver.
He shrugged and slowly walked towards me, each steps light and short. "I took a guess at your reaction. Come on, we'll talk about it inside." He motioned with a nod of his head to the restaurants, but I remained planted, my nose crinkled and my eyes slightly narrowed.
He rolled his eyes. "Come on, Chloe. Stop being difficult."
"The tow-truck driver is just...okay with waiting for us to have dinner?"
"He's more than okay with it."
"Is he now?"
"Yes. Now are you coming or not?" He seemed to give up arguing with me and started walking toward the restaurant on his own. I stared after him, irritation bubbling in my throat, before groaning loudly and walking after him.
