"Tutoring! No fricking way! There is no way I am believing you on this!" Hazel yelled in her high pitched voice as I recounted my recent events to her on the phone.
"Yeah. It's going to be my own personal hell."
Hazel groaned and somehow managed to make it high pitched. Is it even possible to make a high pitched groan? Apparently.
"Chloe, shut up already! You're so annoying with this kind of stuff." Thankfully, her excitement died down with my comment and her voice had started going back to normal.
I rolled my eyes and bit into my sandwich. "Mmm-mm," I said, my mouth full of food. I meant it as a comment of denial, but as I finished chewing I decided to give up on it.
"Yeah, yeah. Anyways, so Johnny and I are awesome, thanks for asking by the way. We're going on another date soon."
"Good for you, Zel." I tried to sound enthusiastic to make up for 'not asking her about her and Johnny', but it ended up sounding the exact opposite.
"Anyways," she said, disregarding my comment, "I gotta go. What are you doing this Saturday night?"
I grimaced and started thinking up an excuse. "Oh..this..Saturday night? I'm..uh..working..?"
Hazel sighed. "Working?"
"Yeah.."
"Liar."
I almost smiled. "No, really, I'm working all weekend. Late shifts. That end very..um..late." She and I both knew that most of my shifts ended around 9:30 since I usually spent my nights on homework, just like we both knew that I was making it really obvious that I was lying.
"You suck. You know that it wouldn't kill you every once in a while to make time for your friends." I could hear a hint of anger and frustration in her voice. I rolled my eyes.
"Listen Zel, I'm sorry. I have work and studying to do and I just don't have the time."
I could hear her click her tongue, which is a weird habit she did whenever she got annoyed. "You're literally always making excuses. I mean, why do you constantly have to work so much anyway? You're in college."
I threw my empty sandwich wrapper in a nearby garbage can. Maybe it wasn't Hazel's fault for not understanding exactly why I worked so much. But I really hated it when she started asking questions, however rare that was. I always got on seriously on edge.
"Zel, I gotta go. I'm sorry if I made you mad."
"Whatever, Chloe. I'll talk to you later."
"By -"
She hung up.
I sighed as I listened to the disconnected beeping on the other end. Hazel and I have been having issues lately and I didn't really know how to solve them. I mean, I couldn't tell her anything more than I already did. Hell, I was surprised that she stuck around long enough with her eyes in the dark for so long.
I clicked end and stuffed my phone in my hoodie pocket. The wind blew through my hoodie and I had to fight the chills threatening their way up my spine.
I tangled my hair and pouted. I was already bothered by the current situation at hand, and now the Hazel situation had just made me all the more agitated. The original bothersome situation, you ask? I was currently walking to the library to meet up with my new tutor.
I set my mouth in a straight line as I reminded myself of this for the thousandth time. My dignity was practically non-existent.
I wondered how this 'tutoring session' would play out. Would he actually help me? Was this some kind of trick? Was he even going to show up? I chewed on my lip and tried to walk as slowly as possible, although the library was already in my sights.
