Shahru sat in his truck, lost in the rumbling idle while he waited for Kajol . She'd been in there a while. He'd already had time to unload the boxes by a door that read "Donation Drop-off," then sit in his truck and wait while she finished whatever it was she was doing in there. Dropping his head back against the headrest, Shahru let out a deep breath. The look on her face this afternoon when he let her know he'd heard part of her conversation with Preity would forever be seared into his brain: pink cheeks, wide eyes, her pouty lips making a small O. He hadn't known whether to laugh at her or kiss the hell out of her.
Kissing her would be a big mistake. He knew he couldn't do that no matter how much his mind told him to. Hell, even letting her know he'd heard her wasn't his smartest move. It led to that sexy look on her face, which led to his hand on her cheek and all sorts of sexual tension that shouldn't be between the two of them. It wouldn't lead anywhere but trouble, and for the past five years he'd steered clear of trouble.
He needed to forget how much he wanted her, forget the thoughts of all the ways he could take her that filled his mind. Better yet he needed to make himself stay away from her. In one short day things were getting personal when he should have kept them completely professional between the two of them. But he couldn't help it. Shahru wanted to know everything about her, but with his questions would come her questions. Questions he wouldn't answer.
The passenger door to his truck jerked open. "Shahru! You won't believe this! I have the best news. You aren't going to believe what just happened."
He cocked his head to the right to look at her. Her enthusiasm ignited a fire in her eyes he'd never witnessed in her before. "Then tell me. The suspense is killing me." He gave her a half grin.
"Are you making fun of me?"
"Just a little bit. But seriously, tell me what happened. I want to know." And he did. He wanted to know about whatever brought this look to her face. Maybe it would be something he could put there again. Wrong thing to think, man.
"I think I might have a job! She's going to interview me tomorrow."
She bounced on the seat in joy, then surprising him even more, she leapt straight toward him and hugged him tightly.
"Can you believe it? I'm in shock. I planned on looking next week, and then poof, this fell into my lap."
Actually he couldn't. That was the last thing he would have expected her to say. Though she hadn't said as much, he knew she came from money. One look at her was all it took to know that. And that was before he saw the Mercedes or ... wait a minute ... didn't she work at some big-shot lawyers' office or something? She backed away, and he let her go even though his body wanted to pull her curvy little body closer. "Um, actually I am a bit surprised. Did you lie on your apartment application, Kajol?"
Her hand jumped up and covered her mouth. Quickly she dropped it again. "I swear I used to work there. I quit just before I moved in. It's my father's firm, and we had a falling out and..."
Shahru placed two fingers against her kissable lips to stop her rambling. "Shh." He gave her a wink. "I won't tell. Your secret is safe with me."
She didn't move and he didn't pull his fingers away. He couldn't. Their eyes locked, Her eyes he realised were not just pure brown but a mix of green, hazel and honey. Holy Hell, he wanted her. So sweet, so sexy. So wrong for him. Shahru pulled his hand away. Her pink tongue darted out and swept her bottom lip. That one about did him in. "Put your seatbelt on. I'll buy you dinner to celebrate. You can tell me more about your job." Dinner was another thing he shouldn't be doing with her that he found himself doing, anyway.
