Trigger warning: Hogwarts AU, fluff

"Bye, love!" Tyler's mom screamed from the train platform. "Have fun!"

Waving, Tyler stepped back from the window. He had found an empty compartment rather quickly, much to his delight, and had situated himself in it without delay. It was his sixth year, and he couldn't wait to see all of his friends again.

He glanced over at the large cage next to him, the large barn owl inside tucking her head under her wing. He watched her for a minute, still a little surprised his parents had let him get one, but happy nonetheless.

The sound of the compartment door rolling open jolted Tyler out of his thoughts. A boy with neon yellow hair and a large, fluffy cat stepped into the compartment, dragging his case behind him.

"Is it okay if I sit here? All the other compartments are full," he said quietly.

"As long as your cat doesn't eat my owl," Tyler responded jokingly, moving his things so the boy could have a place to sit. "I'm Tyler."

"Josh," the boy smiled.

They spent a few hours chatting aimlessly, trying to get to know each other better.

"If you don't mind me asking, what's your blood status?" Josh asked sheepishly. "I won't think of you any differently, I'm just curious."

"Half-blood," Tyler said, getting up to stretch and yawn. "You?"

As Josh opened his mouth to respond, there was a knock on the compartment door. "Would you like anything off the cart?"

Both boys sprung to their feet, digging in their pockets for money. After they had bought pretty much the entire cart, they sat back in their seats.

"I didn't get the chance to say, but I'm muggleborn," Josh mumbled shyly.

"Oh, really?" Tyler's eyebrows rose. "What was your parents' reaction to you being a wizard?"

"They were shocked, obviously, but they were cool with me going," Josh flopped over on his seat, laying flat in his back. "They were also kinda worried about my future, like if I'd get a job, but the wizarding world has plenty of options."

"You said you were in Hufflepuff?" Tyler questioned, turning himself to mirror Josh's position. "You seem like that kind of person."

"Yep. Ravenclaw fits you pretty well too," Josh took a bite out of his Chocolate Frog. "You could be in Slytherin too."

Their conversation was cut off (again) by the announcement echoing through the train, advising students to change into their robes. Turning their backs to each other, the boys quickly changed and sat back down.

From then, the boys were inseparable, and met a few other people, like Mark in Gryffindor and Jenna in Ravenclaw. A few teachers referred to them as the new Marauders, a title they wore with pride.

They remained friends long after school finished, Josh even being the godfather to Jenna and Tyler's baby girl. He couldn't shake the pang in his chest while he was at their wedding, but he ignored it the best he could, and was a good person despite it (unlike Snape whoops).
