"We have a problem," Mare says to me when I find her.
     "That's a shocker," I sigh.
"An inside source has told us that Maven is planning on eliminating all Reds," she tells me.
I shudder at Maven's name. He is no longer my brother. "I was gone for 30 minutes and Maven decides to eradicate half the population?" I ask.
"Yes and- wait, where were you anyways?" she asks me.
"Oh, just having a little talk with your brother," I tell her.
"What did Shade say to you?" she asks with a hint of anger in her voice.
"Nothing bad. He just assured me that if I break your heart he'll break me neck," I say and smile.
She shakes her head and replies, "He's a nightmare."
"Fair enough, but what are we going to do about Maven?" I ask.
Before she can answer, a guy around my age enters the room and Mare raises her eyebrows at the sight of him.
"Don't worry about that, your highness," he says to me and adds a mock bow.
"Who the hell are you?" Mare asks, looking unamused.
"I just so happen to be a Captain of the Scarlet Guard," he says and looks slightly offended.
"I've never seen you before," I say.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Carac Daven," he says and winks at Mare. "But I know who you are, little lightning girl. And may I say that you are much more beautiful in person."
I step in front of her and glare at him. "No, you may not say that. Mare is my fiancée so watch your tongue."
"Oh, I'm quite aware of your relationship. I find it amusing. A Red nothing and a Silver prince," he says and leans against a wall.
"I am not some simple Red," Mare says with sparks dancing in her hands. "I'm a Newblood."
"As am I. And my power is something very dark. It might scare you," he says.
"Oh, go to hell," Mare says and rolls her eyes at him.
"Funny you say that. I can control the dead," he says with a smirk and walks out of the room.
Control the dead? An odd power but one that could save our army. Still, I already hate him.
     "He's an ass," Mare says.
"I couldn't agree more," I say and pull her close. I kiss her head and say, "If he lays a hand on you I'll turn him into a pile of ashes."
