Shattered Heart (Red Queen)

Chapter Thirteen

•Mare POV•
Today is the day. I finally will escape and be free again. Everyone is preparing for the wedding tomorrow and no one is concerned about the bride escaping.
The whole palace is decorated for a royal wedding and I almost feel bad that it will never happen. Guest have started arriving and that makes me nervous. I didn't realize how many people would come and that makes it a lot harder to escape. But it can and will be done.
Four maids are in my room and are making last minute changes to my dress. It's a shame that I'll never wear it.
"I think we need to add something else," one of the maids says.
"Why don't you two go make something for it and I'll stay here with Lady Mare," another maid says.
They hurry out of my room and I am left alone with two maids. As soon as the door shuts, one of them runs to my closet and grabs some clothes out.
"What are you doing?" I ask her.
"Here, put these on," she says and throws a shirt and some pants at me.
"Not until you tell me who you are and what is going on," I say firmly.
Suddenly, her face changes before my eyes and I am looking at Nanny.
"Nanny!" I exclaim and run to her.
She hugs me and tells me, "Quiet or they'll hear you. Hurry up and change so I can get you out of here."
I do as she says and look to the other maid in my room.
"Who is she?" I ask.
"A healer. I'm Cara Dion, a newblood," she tells me.
I nod and Nanny take something out of her pocket. She hands it to me and I see it is a small key.
"You'll be needing that," she says.
It's the key to unlock the Silent Stone around my neck. I put the key in the lock and the necklace falls to the floor. Nothing is stopping my power now, but I don't feel the buzz of electricity I once felt.
"Will my powers ever return?" I ask worriedly. In order for this plan to work, I have to have my electricity.
"Yes, and that's why I brought a healer," Nanny says. "She can bring your power back.
Cara places her hands on my shoulders and heals me. A wave of electricity crashes down on my and all of my powers are restored. Sparks dance on my hands and it is the best feeling in the world. The lightning girl is back.

•Cal POV•
We are waiting outside the walls of Archeon for Nanny's signal. We've been waiting here for a while and I'm afraid something has happened.
"Look!" a soldier shouts and points to the castle.
A purple lightning bolt streaks through the sky. Mare is free. Nanny did it and it's time to attack.
"That's the signal! Go!" I yell.
Newbloods advance first and burst through the gates. They battle Silver soldiers and take them down with ease. Silvers are no match for these deadly Newbloods.
"Cal!" Shade shouts. "Go find Mare!"
I nod to him and race towards the castle. She's in there somewhere, but so is Maven. I have to get to her before he does.
There are so many people in the city and it is making it a lot harder to fight. Silvers of my own strength challenge me and I take them down. Many run for cover and are afraid to fight. They get out of my way as my fire burns everything in my path. The Prince of Norta is back and he's here for his queen.

•Maven POV•
"SHE ESCAPED?!" I yell.
I knew she would do this. Mare doesn't love me and never will. For a short time, I believed she did love me. It was all just a lie.
"No, your majesty. She's still in the castle but she has regained her powers," a guard tells me.
"Then why are you just standing here? GO FIND HER!" I demand.
Mare will not escape so easily. When I find her, there will be hell to pay. She betrayed me again and she will face my wrath.
Another guard runs into my study and says, "The city is overrun. The Scarlet Guard is here."
"WHAT?!" I exclaim and the papers in front of me burst into flames.
They are here for Mare and my crown. They will not have either one of them. Their blood will paint the city.
"Kill them all," I say. "Now, get out."
I sit down and run my hands through my hair. This day has turned into a nightmare. Who do these people think they are? I'm the king and they will all bow at my feet.

•Mare POV•
I run through the halls with Nanny and Cara at my heels. I electrocute anyone who stands in my way. I had forgotten how my power felt when I was a prisoner. No one will stop me now.
"The Scarlet Guard is in the city," Nanny tells me.
I nod and continue running. The maze of halls are never ending. There must be and exit somewhere.
"Here!" I say and open a door.
Sunlight greets me and I step outside. I take a deep breath and smile. I'm free, after all this time.
     I hear gunshots in the distance and run towards them. Nanny and Cara follow but I stop them.
     "Get to safety," I tell them. "I can handle this fight."
     Cara looks at Nanny and she agrees with me. They run in the other direction, away from the fighting.
     "Mare!" someone yells.
     I turn to see Darmain running to me. He is not the person I was hoping for, but I don't mind.
     "Let's get you out of here," he says and grabs my arm.
     "No. I have to help them," I say and gesture to the fighting.
     "They have it under control. Once they learn that you're safe, they'll get out of here," he tells me. 
    I open my mouth to respond, but my words turn into a scream when I see Silver soldiers.
     "Watch out!" I yell and lightning flows from my hands.
     It kills one of them and Darmain turns to face them.
     "Get behind me," he says and blocks me from their guns.
     They shoot at him, but it doesn't harm his impenetrable skin. More lighting strikes and kills more soldiers. Another group of Silvers join us and start shooting. A shiver blasts ice at us and I stop it with lightning. A magnetron bends metal around us and traps us in a steel cage.
     "We're screwed," Darmain says.
     "No we're not," I say and lighting shoots from my hands.
        I hit the magnetron and the metal falls to the ground. The shiver continues his attack and I try my best to stop it. The others Silver are shooting and using their powers against us. There are too many of them.
     "MARE!"  a familiar voice yells.
     My heart stops and my lighting fades. Cal. He's here. I look into his eyes and start to run to him. Before I reach him, a wall of fire appears in front of me. It burns my arms and I scream in pain.
     "Where do you think you're going?" Maven asks and walks towards me.
     "No," I say quietly.
     I was so close to being free. He can't stop me. He won't stop me.
     "Don't be a fool, Mare," he says and grabs my arm.
     His hands are on fire and burn my arm even more. Cal's eyes widen with fear as he watches. He can't do anything because he is afraid Maven will kill me if he does.
    "You're mine. You're not going anywhere," he says and drags me away.
