Growing up pt 3

*age 5*
" Makuahine, I wanna surf too!"
"You're too little, O Hilo" Hunk's mother says sitting with him in the sand. A pout crosses Hunk's face.
"You'll be able to surf in 2 or 3 years, you father will teach you then okay?" Hunk nods as he watches his 9 year old brother surfing, their father cheering him on along with his sister.
*age 7*
"Makuakāne! Can you teach me to surf now? Pleeeaaassseee?" Hunk pleads with his father. His father grins and takes him to where they keep their boards. He picks up Pua's board and carries it down to the beach for Hunk. Hunk began to think, as he normally did when it was silent. His thoughts went to his siblings. His older siblings were twins, the ones with the cool names. His older brother was Aiia, his sister Pua. Their names together transtates to hunter's arrow. (Dont google it from Hawaiian to English, you'll get food company but I promise this is what its supposed to mean. Also Aiia is 3 minutes older than Pua so thats how the names are arranged, aiia pua) Hunk was just...Hunk. no special translation, no cool twin to spend time with.
"Wai Keko! You gonna learn to surf or not?" His father calls to him, only then does realize he stopped walking and his dad was far down the beach. He jogs to catch up, but its hard on his little legs. He finally gets there and his father puts the board in the sand.
"Let's get started"
*age 10*
"Hunk! There's an upcoming surfing contest for 9-11 year olds and one for 12-14 year olds! We should all enter." Aiia says as they walk home from school, Hunk proudly looking at his functional solar cooker that got 1st at the science fair.
"I dont know...I'm not very good"
"Hunk you're great! You're way ahead of the kids your age. You could totally win." Pua says
"You really think so?"
"I know so"
"....alright. I'll enter"
*age 14*
Hunk lays in his bed, his 'sad' playlist on repeat. He knows it's a bunch of girly songs about breakups but right now he needs it. Slowly, tears begin to fall though he tries to stop them. He begins to sob into his pillow, not wanting to worry his siblings or parents who are spending time together. His mother slowly knocks and enters.
"O Hilo, what happened?" She rushes to his bed and sits beside him.
"Liv d-dumped me." Hunk manages to say, choking on air. His mother pulls him close. Hunk had been crushing on Liv since 1st grade and he finally asked her out last year. He did everything he was supposed to do, he made her cookies, surprised her with flowers and other gifts, didn't forget dates or her birthday, held her hand, everything. And she just came up to Hunk said "We're over" and went off with her friends.
"Do you want Pua and Aiia?" His mother asks gently and Hunk wants to say no, he hates being a bother; but cant stop himself from nodding. His mother leaves and moments later he hears to pairs of feet rushing to his room. They slowly open the door
"Oh Hunk..." he immediately recognizes the voice to be Pua's. He wipes his eyes and his sister sits next to him.
"What happened? Is it Liv? I told you that girl was no good, did you guys get into a fight?"
Tears fall down Hunk's cheeks again.
"She uh, dumped me."
Hunk is pulled into his siblings famous 'twin hug'.
*age 16*
"I cant believe I'm going to the Garrison, it's so far from home."
"Well you'll come back and visit, right O Hilo?"
Hunk nods. "Of course. "
And off Hunk went, on his plane, into the unknown.

Pua= arrow 5. Aiia= hunter's 6.wai Keko= water monkey. Sorry for the weird updates, I'll try and do every other day till the backstories are over. Also, would you like to hear what happens to the parents when their kids are gone?)
