Fox

"Fox," I hear Lily croak from her spot on the couch. I am sitting on the arm of the couch, near her feet. She beckons me closer with her left hand, since her right hand is holding an ice pack to her head. I get off the arm and squat by her head. She leans forward and kisses my cheek. I barely feel it. "Thanks," she whispers.

"For what?"

"Everything. What you did down there for me."

"It was nothing. I was glad to help my damsel in distress." I smirk.

She slaps my face. It only stings a little, but I deserve it.

"I am not a damsel in distress," she says through clenched teeth.

"Good thing all you wear is red, no one will be able to tell there's blood on it." Lily smirks.

"Sooo..." I say, changing the subject, "what do you want to do?"

"Paint," Lily says.

"Okay, painting it is."

I run upstairs to get my paints, canvases, my easel, and paintbrushes. By the time I get back downstairs, Lily is asleep. I set my stuff on the table in the breakfast nook(except for the easel) and walk back to the living room. I bend down next to the couch and lightly tap Lily's shoulder.

She wakes up and bolts upright. "I'm ready, let's paint."

I hold my hand out for her to use to get up, but she doesn't use it.

She wobbles to the kitchen, so I pull out a chair for her next to the easel. I put the canvas on the easel and set some acrylic paints out for Lily.

"Oh, I almost forgot," I say, thinking of the surprise I made Lily.

"What?" she asks as I start running upstairs.

"It's a surprise," I yell from my room.

I grab the necklace and ring from my underwear drawer(don't worry, all clean) and feel the other one around my neck, under my shirt. Running downstairs, I stuff them in my pocket. As I reach the bottom, I start walking.

"Lily, I made something for you," I say, pulling them out of my pocket slowly. She looks up from painting.

"Oh, Fox!" Lily says, putting her paintbrush in the water. "I love it!"

"May I?" I say, holding both ends of the necklace. She nods. I go to stand behind her and close the clasp. I just happened to look up and see what she had painted. It looked almost like the yin yang necklace I made her, except the blue part wasn't a line defining bottom, and the red part didn't have a line defining the top.

"I like what you did," I said, "We must be psychic!" I lift the other part of the yin yang out of my shirt, showing her it.

"I painted the same thing as the necklace you made me!" She says, and I give her the ring.

Her painting is half painted and it looks like the red side is a fire going up. The blue side is barely outlined.

"Danggg, you can paint," I say.

"It's not that good," Lily says.

"No, it's not. It's amazing."

"You got me."

An hour later, Lily's mum arrives to pick her up. "Bye," I say, hugging her goodbye. She puts her arms around my waist.

"Bye," she says, but it's muffled because she's talking into my shirt. We pull away and I hand her the painting she painted. I kiss the top of her head and walk her to her car.

"Did y'all have fun?" her mum asks.

"Oh, loads," I say, "See you at school!"
