Chapter 9

She told me her secret! Maybe that means she trusts me. I know for fact that she likes me. So says her hair.

"Lily. I have a story." I look into her bright blue eyes. "Once upon a time... just kidding. When I was about seven, I liked cats. One day, I um, accidentally turned my cat's ear bright blue. So whenever I imagine a cat with a different pattern, it becomes that pattern."

Lily looks at me in disbelief. "No way!"

"Yes way. If my cat was with me, I'd prove it to you."

"Can you change the cat back to how it was before?"

"I suppose I could."

Louis walks in our room. "Was I not invited to the party?"

"Oh, hi Louis," River says.

"Fox was telling us how he can turn cats different colors by thinking it!" Lily says.

"Cool, but... I can talk to animals."

River gasps. "Really?"

Louis walks over to the bed and sits beside River and whispers something in her ear. River blushes.

"What about you, Riv? Do you have any peculiarities?" I ask her.

"Yes?" she answers. Her and Lily exchange glances.

"Sooo," I prod.

"I can change the weather. If I'm sad, it rains, if I'm mad, there's lightning, if I don't want anyone to see me, I don't become invisible, but no one can find me. If I'm happy, flowers will spring up in my path."

"No way!!!" I say in disbelief.

"Yeah. I was tired on the way here, so to me, it was only a quarter of a mile instead of three."

Louis shakes his head. "You still amaze me. What about you, Lil?"

Lily starts, "Mine isn't really special. It's more like a curse than an ability. When I like someone, this strand of hair turns their favorite color." Lily points to the red strand of hair.

"Whose favorite color is that?" Louis asks.

Lily sort of blushes then looks at me. It's clear she's not going to say anything, so I speak up.

"Me."

"Wanna play a game?" It interrupts my reading. Everyone else is reading too. We are all splayed out on the floor, Louis by River and Lily by me.

"Yeah! What game?" I ask, having no idea who spoke.

"What about truth or dare?" Lil asks from right beside me.

Louis tosses his light blue quaffle and catches it. "I have an idea."

From thin air, Louis produces a dark blue sharpie and writes his name on one of the sections of leather that makes up the quaffle. Then, he hands the sharpie and the quaffle to River. River hands them to Lily, who writes her name with two capital "L"s. Lastly, Lily passes the ball to me and I write "Fox" on the quaffle and make the dot of her 'i' into a heart.

"Toss it to someone, and whoever their right thumb lands on is who they ask truth or dare. Also, you can't dare someone to pick truth, or vice versa." I toss it to Louis.

"Lil. Truth or dare?"

She pauses, thinking for a moment. Then, she smiles. "Dare"

"I dare you to dye your hair differently."
