Chapter Five: Close Call

We ended up walking instead of traveling. Since Keno didn't have wings it would be a bit...well difficult to carry him around.

"We should buy some food and water," Luna said while we walked.

"She's right. If we buy some food and water it will be easier and we won't get dehydrated or stare to death," Skylar replied.

"I guess we better get out of the woods and into a town to search for a store," Sapphy said looking around to see if there was any opening out of the woods close by.

"What about our wings?" SkyBird cautioned.

"I we just walk into a town people are gonna see our wings," Ray answered.

"And my ears," Keno replied poiting at his ears.

"The townspeople would probably run around screaming," Sol said with a giggle, trying to imagine it.

"They'd probably call the police," Autumn replied.

"No. They'd call the President," Skylar said.

"I don't think they'd go as far to call the President. I think they'd call the media or the FBI,"  Ayame said.

"Do we have enough cloaks for everyone?" Peter asked me.

"We have ten cloaks," I answered.

"Are you gonna wear your hood Keno?" Peter asked Keno.

"Yup," Keno answered putting his hood over his ears.

"Looks like we got just enough cloaks for everyone," I said handing everyone a cloak. I handed Ayame a hat to cover her wolf ears. We all started walking again. Once in town we stepped into the nearest store. Sapphy and SkyBird looked at some of the clothing in the store. Keno and Autumn were looking at biker jackets and hoodies. Ayame was sitting down and chatting with Skylar. Sol was looking at cute stuff while Luna looked at gory stuff. Peter, Ray, and I bought the food and water.

"So where should we go now?" I asked everyone.

"I think we should go to New York," Keno replied.

"There lots of people there though," Sapphy replied back.

"What about Colorado?" SkyBird shrugged.

"That's too like Maximum Ride," Sol and Luna said at the same time.

"What about California?" Ayame asked.

"Yeah we should go to California!" Skylar shouted.

"Cool," Ray replied.

"Okay then I guess we're going to California," Peter said with a grin.

"There's one problem though," Autumn said to us.

"What is it?" Sapphy asked.

"Keno doesn't have wings. How are we supposed to get to California if Keno can't fly?" Autumn asked.

"Oh yeah that's right," SkyBird said shaking her head.

"Two people could carry him," Ray suggested.

"Ayame and I will," Skylar announced.

"Are you sure you two want to carry me?" Keno asked Ayame and Skylar.

"We'll do it," Skylar reasured him. Ayame nodded and smiled. We all took off and left the cloaks and hat behind. Skylar and Ayame struggled with Keno's weight but they stayed afloat. I looked below and saw water.

"I think we're over the ocean now," I told everyone. 

"I hope we see a dolphin," Sol said to Luna.

"I hope we see a shark," Luna replied to Sol. Skylar laughed at the comment. Just as she did her wing hit Ayame's wing. Their momemtum was lost as they began to fall towards the ocean. Autumn flapped her wings and was able to grab Keno. I raced to grab either Skylar or Ayame. Just as I reached for Skylar a figure grabbed her and swooped up. I looked up and saw a boy with brown hair. He wore a black hoodie and jeans. His wings were dark grey with cobalt blue tips.

"Ah...!" Ayame screamed as she plunged into the water. My face turned pale from fear. When wings become wet they will weigh an avian down and the avian will drown. I flew down and wanted to dive in after her. Sapphy and SkyBird grabbed me back away.

"What are you doing?! We need to save her! She'll die if we don't!" I screamed at them. I thrashed around trying to get out of their grip, but it was useless.

"If you dive after her you will die too," Sapphy replied still holding me back.

"What about Ayame?! We need to save her!" I screamed. Ray looked down at the water and saw some movement. She tapped Sol and Luna. The twins looked down and saw the movement.

"There's something down there moving," Luna said still watching the movement. We all looked down at the water. No one spoke a word. A girl came out of the water with Ayame. The girl's skin was light brown. She had black hair, brown eyes, and wore red glasses. She wore a green shirt and blue jeans. Her wings were white like mine. I looked at the boy who had Skylar and then at the girl who had Ayame.

"Who are you both?" I asked the two.

"I'm Aisha," the girl holding Ayame answered.

"My name is Naxtern," the boy holding Skylar said shyly.

"I'm Hero Winged. That's SkyBird Winged, that's Peter Pureaheart, that's Sapphy, that's Ayame, that's Autumn, that's Keno, that's Skylar, that's Ray, that's Sol, and that's Luna," I said pointing to each member.

"How were you able to save Ayame?" SkyBird asked Aisha.

"Well when I'm in water I have a mermaid tail. Plus my wings are waterproof so they don't weigh me down," Aisha replied.

"That must be cool to be able to go underwater," Sol said.

"Do you ever get afraid of the sharks?" Luna asked.

"It's pretty cool and the sharks are my friends. All the sea creatures like me," Aisha said to the twins.

"Do you both want to join our flock?" Sapphy asked Aisha and Naxtern. Naxtern nodded his head.

"Cool. I'll join," Aisha answered.

"We should get to land before it gets dark," I told everyone.

"Right," Ray said as we all flew. Our flock had thirteen members so far. I wondered if we would run into anymore avians along the way. I shook my head. What are the chances of bumping into another avian?

We landed in a desolate area and camped for the night. Naxtern, Keno, and Autumn slept together. Sapphy and SkyBird were snuggled up next to one another. Sol and Luna were sleeping soundly together. Skylar and Ayame were sleeping next to each other. Ray, Peter, Aisha, and I slept as a group. It felt like our family was growing by the minute. I closed my eyes and listened to the noises of bugs buzzing, animals roaming around, and trees swaying in the wind.

The President banged his fists on his desk, "What do you mean you haven't caught those three brats that tried to kill me?!"

"Sir we're having difficulty tracking them down," a man in a black suit wearing black sunglasses replied.

"I want you to find them. Once you find them kill them. This world doesn't need freaks," the President oredered.

"Yes Sir. I will find those three kids as soon as possible," the man replied.

"Good," the President grinned.
