Roy paced back and forth on the apartment floor.
"Red, stop it right now, you're going to make our daughter throw up."
Our daughter.
Roy Harper, clone, nighttime vigilante, and now father, looked down at the redheaded little girl lying in his arms. His rapid pacing had made her turn slightly green, so he grabbed the rag of the collapsible changing table and set her on his shoulder, gently patting her back until he heard contented burbles and felt something warm hit the rag.
"Good girl." He kissed her nose, causing her wide eyes to blink and her face to screw up in confusion. Lian's expression made her daddy give a short laugh.
"How's the pho coming?" He asked.
Jade nodded bluntly, grabbing spices and stirring a pot, turning up the heat on the stovetop and re-adjusting a ponytail of thick, black hair. "Good so far, just keep her out of the kitchen. I don't want Lian getting a burn on her hand so that she can't hold her first sai."
"Or bow." Roy teased, settling for sitting on the couch and jiggling his leg nervously. All the bouncing made Lian laugh.
Jade Nyugen paused to glare at her husband, but then the timer went off.
And the doorbell rang.
"Well, that'll be them." Roy stood up and took a deep breath.
"Chill, Red." Jade hung up her apron and took Lian from Roy. "It's just my sister and her boyfriend. If things get ugly, we can take them."
Roy sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Jade, we talked about this. We're not "taking" anyone."
Jade smirked. "Still, it's fun to think about...occasionally."
"Sometimes I wonder why I even married you." Roy shook his head. He'd barely taken one step towards the door when Jade grabbed him bay the collar of his shirt. She spun him around so that he was facing her, slowly moving her hand so that she caressed the back of his neck, pulling him closer until their lips met.
Several rounds of impatient door-knocks and nervous threats to break down the door later (Wally had even tried Roy's cell a couple times) Jade finally stepped back.
"Now do you remember?" She teased.
"Alright, alright." Roy relented, giving her the tiniest hint of a grin.
Lian waved her fists- almost as if to clap- and Jade waved him towards the door.
"Go, before we have to fix that. Our insurance doesn't cover speedster attacks."
Roy managed a chuckle, and finally opened the door in the middle of one of Wally's rapid knockings, just barely dodging a speedy fist.
"Oops. Sorry." Wally apologized, taking a step back.
"Woah, what's got you all cleaned up?" He asked, taking a better look at his fellow redhead.
Artemis took a deep whiff. "You smell a lot nicer than Wally described you as."
"And what, exactly did he use to describe me?"
"Man, their are few things as sad as a rotten Thanksgiving turkey, and you were the human manifestation of that the last time I saw you."
"Noted."
"So," Artemis pushed past Roy in her brash way, pulling off her scarf and coat in one fluid motion, holding them out for a gentlemanly Wally to take. Roy scoffed. And they said he'd changed.
"What did you want us to-" Artemis stopped mid-sentence, seeing who was in the kitchen.
"Jade?"
Cheshire sincerely smiled at her sister. Roy should know, he was one of the few who were lucky enough to know that side of her.
"Hello Artemis." Jade said, rocking Lian back and forth. She was wearing the Green Arrow onesie Oliver had practically shoved at them when he first met Lian. It was almost a homage to her aunt.
Even Wally was speechless for once.
Roy carefully made his way across the room to his wife and daughter. "We're still adjusting to domestic life, but..." he shrugged. "We're managing."
"You're married?" Wally asked at the same time Artemis shrieked, "You had a baby!?"
"Here." Jade slipped a napping Lian into Artemis's outstretched arms. At first, the blonde was shocked, but when Lian sighed in her sleep, she relaxed ever so slightly.
"She is pretty cute."
"Hey, look, I think she's got freckles!" Wally put an arm around Artemis and pointed at the baby's cheeks.
"I think they're taking it pretty well." Roy whispered to Jade.
Jade smirked back at him. "Remember, we still have to tell my parents."
I just love all the little quips in this chapter xD
