Angels.
They are not what we thought they are.
Months passed and we still had no idea about how to stop Lilith from breaking seals. Many things has happened along the way: Pam got glass eyes to replace those she lost and got back into the business; Ruby spent more and more time in our company what stressed me out even more; and lastly, the boys found a girl named Anna Milton who they assumed to be a prophet. I couldn't meet her in person for that I was on a job helping Bobby out. What a shame though because I wanted to thank her for what she's done for me and for all of us.
Anna wasn't a prophet, she was an angel fallen from grace and reborn in a human body who lost her memories. Most of her powers were stripped away from her when she lost her glory, however she still could hear the angel talking through a special skill. Whenever she heard the voices she involuntarily tuned in to the frequency of her once fellow squad members'. This is what Dean called an "angel radio". Anna was able to hear everything they said starting from casual conversation to actual team based operations.
The Winchesters puzzled some pieces together after they saved Anna from a bunch of demons and they came up with a conclusion regarding me. Sam and Dean believed that the voices I heard since I was 16 were coming from the angels and somehow, I have the same skill as Anna has: I can tune in live to Angel Radio.
What the boys came up with made sense but by answering one thing we raised more questions. How can I hear the angels if I'm only human? I've consulted with many psychics over the years and at least one of them should have noticed if I was different but that never happened. Always the same old song kept going on repeat: "she's very sensitive, that's all there is to it".
With that information, I had sort of a bigger understanding on why would an angel like Sariel rush to help me out. Maybe I can hear him too and by that I could compromise him, which would be a rather easy thing to do since his secrecy meter is hitting the maximum portion, so to say. If he let me die that wouldn't be very Christian now, would it? So he saved my backside and I'm in his debt ever since. Seems like the reasonable thing to me.
And now that we've back on the subject of Sariel here is something about him: when he first said his name I knew I heard it somewhere before, I just couldn't remember when and in what context. Of course, I ran a quick search and built a case by myself.
I read about Sariel in the Book of Enoch, he has been mentioned once or twice in the first book and described as one of the leaders of a group called The Watchers. They were an assembly of angels who descended from Heaven to Earth to live like and be among humans. The Watchers were a small group of about 2 and half a hundred members including the 10 leaders. Sariel was one of the elite 10.
According to the book of Enoch Sariel was a Watcher, as we've established earlier. Glad you're listening. He was the one who taught us, humans, the cycle of the Moon; a vital part of understanding how the ebb and flow works, not to mention navigation purposes and so on. He did that because he and his brothers were threatened by Heaven. As I said, they wanted to be like humans and be one of us, however it wasn't so simple.
Oh, golly. I don't know how to put this delicately... The thing is, the angels joined us because they fancied mortal women, at least that's what the text says. They wanted to bed them and have children, be married, own a house with a white picket fence, etcetera. But their kids, the Nephilim, also known as the Anakim (insert cheap Star Wars reference here), were blood hungry giants, who destroyed the peaceful landscape. It's more gruesome in the book but let's not go into details. Long story short: God didn't like the fact that his personal body guards and soldiers brought all this misery to his favourite creation and ordered his archangels to stop the Nephilim and bring back the Watchers to Heaven where they'll be punished for their crimes.
(🎶Judas Priest - Saints in hell)
The Watcher liked Earth, they wanted to stay, so naturally they defended themselves and fought to stay where they were. Their human wives, family and followers helped them in this distress by arming themselves with knowledge and weapons.
Remember the name Azazel? I mentioned him by name a fair amount of times I'm sure. Well, prepare to be shocked for that Azazel was also an angel who sympathised with the Watchers' cause. Men and women were trained by him and the by the Watchers to be soldiers and were educated how to kill.
Azazel „taught men to make swords and knives and shields and breastplates; and made known to them the metals and the art of working them; and bracelets and ornaments; and the use of antimony and the beautifying of the eyelids; and all kinds of costly stones and all colouring tinctures" – says the book.
Oh yeah, if you believe what the writer says, apparently, crafting, working metal and makeup in general is a sin too. How silly is that? Never mind.
Let me wrap it up for you: what Enoch claims in his first book is that angels brought sin to humans, corrupted the Earth and shaped the world as we now know it. No wonder this isn't cannon, right?
The story doesn't have a happy ending I'm afraid. The Nephilim were slaughtered, the Watchers - alongside Azazel - were captured, and put to trial.
Raphael chained up and tossed Azazel into a hole filled with sharp rocks and pointy stones in the dessert. He shall remain there until Judgement Day when he'll be transferred to Hell.
Whilst the other angels were exiled from Heaven and imprisoned in a "terrible place" where fire is towering over them and it's rather depressing in 24/7. In other translations, it says that day and night the blazing columns melt burning honey on the fallen angels for the rest of eternity.
So if what Enoch has written about is true than my guardian angel, Sariel is an escapee who's also an archangel. One of the 7 in fact.
Oh boy, that's too much biblical lore for one day but I have to tell you all this or the story won't make sense.
I believe there are no more than 7 archangels in existence, one for each day of the week. Sariel's the archangel of God's law, the celestial police whose duty is to punish those who sin in spirit (I guess it means ghosts, I don't know for certain) as well as the angels who disobey. His day is Saturday, by the way.
That's basically all the info I gained from several sources including both the reliable and unreliable sort. All what was left is to talk to someone who actually saw what happened. Nevertheless, If I do that I would most likely endanger the only truly powerful cosmic being who took me under his wings when I was in danger. I had to sit down, be idle and wait for the right time. Too bad we were racing the clock.
