"Sweety I told you a million times that daddy's not gonna be home in time." My mother sighed, helplessly trying to get me into bed.
"I'm not going to bed without daddy telling me a story!" I yelled, slamming my little feet on the ground repeatedly.
" I'll tell you the story." She shushed, trying to get me not to yell. It was obvious she had a headache.
"No! Daddy!" I started crying.
"Please just lay in bed, daddy will tell you a story tomorrow." She ran a hand through her hair, her body shaking from stress.
"Where is he?!" I yelled.
"He's working late, I already told you. Now please just let me tell you the story tonight." She grabbed my little hands, begging me with her bloodshot eyes.
She was crying, and that's when I knew I was really hurting her. I nodded, wiping her tears, then my own.
I walked over to the bookshelf and picked out 'A Weekend at Wendalls''. Then, I hopped into bed and handed her the book.
She kissed me on the head than began to read.
"Grammy! Lily!" I yelled as I walked into the dusty house.
"In here, Em!" My sister yelled from the living room.
I trudged my way to the kitchen, setting down the bags of groceries I just picked up for them.
Grabbing a coke from the fridge, I walked into the living room where Liliana was feeding my grandma her dinner.
Playing on the tv was a re-run of ICarly, the one where they lose all the chicks. Of course it was at full blast, my grandma pretty much being deaf.
I walked over to the coffee table and grabbed the remote, turning the tv down. My grandma finally realized I was here and her eyes lit up.
"Tiana! Where have you been all night?!" My grandma yelled, smacking Lily away.
"And why do you have this girl here?!"
"No grandma– calm down. It's Ember, Tiana's daughter remember?" I ran over to her, kneeling in front of her chair.
"And that's Liliana, my sister." I calmly spoke, rubbing the back of her hands with my thumbs.
"You don't have a sister, your dad never let us have anymore kids after you." My grandma rose her eyebrow in confusion.
"Can you please get this girl out of my face!" She shouted, pushing Lily away from her once again.
"Did you give her her medicine today!?" I shouted at Lily, my anxiety rising.
"Yes, this morning and after lunch." She shook her head violently, tears beginning to form in her eyes.
I felt bad that Lily had to spend her life doing this everyday, and that I shouted at her, but I wasn't in the position to apologize right now.
"Sorry mom, I lost track of time on my way home from the Library, you should really get to bed." I played along, grabbing her walker and pulling her up.
"I've been waiting up all night, worried sick that something had happened to you. I can't lose you too." She gently cried.
"It's alright mom, I'm not going anywhere." I reassured her, helping her to her room.
I tucked her in and made my way out of the room and into the bathroom. I locked the door behind me, sliding down it and beginning to cry.
Everyday my grandma would forget more and more, and now it was to the point where she didn't even recognize me anymore.
I told myself I wouldn't cry over my grandmas disease, but it was so goddamn hard. My sister was suffering and so was I. I mean for Christ sakes I snapped at Lily for just trying to help.
I wiped some tears off, pulling my phone out from the back of my scrubs. I dialed Cole's number, holding it to my ear.
"Hey, Cole?" I spoke into the phone as he picked up, listening to him reply with a 'what's up?'
"Are you busy right now? I really need to get out." I played with my shoe lace, listening to his response.
"Alright thanks, I'll be at your place in ten." I slightly smiled to myself, standing up and looking in the mirror.
I cleaned up my ran makeup, and quickly made my way out of the house. The cold air hit me with a pang, making me regret not wearing anything under my scrubs.
I hopped in the car, buckling my seat belt, and making my way over to Cole's.
