Chapter 6
Justin is staring at us, shock obvious on his face. Zack replicating that look back at Justin. Well this is awkward. "I thought you said you were going to bed." They asked each other at the same time. Zack cleared his throat, "I went to the Library and Layla was there so I helped her carry her books back here."
"Oh right," Justin says. "I just saw the light was on so I came to see why you were still awake." Bullsh*t. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the truth. He rubs the back of his neck then says, "Well night." And stalks back to his room. I look back at Zack. "Well night... Oh and Layla,"
"Ya?"
"Kick some ass in training tomorrow." I grin at him.
"Will do."
Justin and Zack stand in front of me, having come first in their class Emma asked them to train us as the actual instructors are otherwise occupied. The training room is white - no surprise there - with one wall shelved with weapons; my eyes automatically zoom in on the daggers. "Today we are going to learn where you two stand with your training, we are going to find your weaknesses and strengthen them. Once you have passed the physical tests and there is time we will move onto elemental magic. Any questions?" I raise my hand. "Yes Layla?" Zack asks. Grinning I say, "When do we get started?"
"Firstly we see how you cope with hand-to-hand combat. Nick you're against me." Zack states and walks to the center of the room. "Don't worry, I'll take it easy on you. First one to surrender or is KOed loses." Nick takes up a fighting stance, "Never underestimate your opponent Zack." There is a sudden blur of motion, a crack as someone's nose breaks and Nick's on the floor. "Surrender?" I cringe as Nick straightens out his nose, "Not yet." He says and the fight is back on. Nick forces Zack into a corner, nice battle strategy. Nick aims a kick at Zack's chest, having no space to back up the kick hits its mark. Zack falls to the floor, Nick picks him up and pins him against the wall, "Pinned." He smirks. Zack blinks, "Fine, you win."
"Nice work there," I praise him as we fist bump. He picks up a water bottle and starts to chug only to spit it back out. "Zack, I've got your salt water here." He chucks it over to Zack who gives him a sheepish smile. "Layla, please do me a favor and kick that dosh bag's ass." He says gesturing at Justin. "Your wish is my command." I make my way over to Justin. "Ready to have your ass whipped, Princess?" He smiles smugly. "No, but I am ready to win that I-pod."
I aim my right leg to kick Justin's head, he ducks and as I land on my right foot my left lands a surprise hit on him. "Nice!" I hear Nick say as Zack makes a low whistle. We both punch and kick but all get blocked. I finally am able to sweep my legs and knock him off balance; he lands in a pouncing position and tackles me. He tries to pin me but I still have my right hand free. Zack's words from last night float back into my mind...why not give it a try. I let out a girly giggle, which catches him off guard; I then trace my fingers up his arm. He stiffens, "Layla, what are you doing?" God, men can be so easy to manipulate sometimes! "Justin..." I whisper in what I hope is a seductive voice. His grip on my other hand loosens, sucker. Before he can register it I have him flipped over and pinned. "I believe you owe me an I-pod AND a doc." I grin.
As he gets up I can't help but notice how fit he looks...Woah! Layla he has a girlfriend, stop right there. I walk off to get some water but my gaze slowly wonders back to him, it can't hot to admire surely? I mean why would God put hot guys on this planet if not to notice? I've never been kissed or been in a relationship, I'm just going to blame all of this on my overwhelming, unquenched hormones.
Nick stands up, shock clear on his face. "Where did you learn to fight like that?" I'm hesitant to tell him but he's my partner so I decide I might as well. "My mother was pretty paranoid, she trained with me nearly everyday." Nick cocks his head to the side as if I was a puzzle, maybe I was. Zack brought over a tray of daggers, now this is going to be fun! Justin stalks over and I can't help but feeling a little smug that I've damaged his pride.
"Knife throwing, who wants to go first?" Nick and I glance at each other.
"Ladies first."
"Then by all means Tinkerbelle go ahead." I retort but reach for the daggers anyway. I hit all seven targets with a bulls-eye; I turn around to see stunned expressions all around. "Been throwing knifes since I could walk." I explain.
"No sh*t." Zack exclaims. I hit the moving targets with almost the same results. Nick isn't as good as me but he isn't too bad either. "I feel sorry for anyone who pisses you off," Nick says casually leaning against the wall, his arms folded across his chest.
At lunch I find that Taylor and Beth are in our usual seats, bloody hypocrite I think at Taylor and make my way over to a table with a few free seats. "Mind if I join?" A cute girl with curly brown hair smiled at me.
"Of course. I'm Jenna. You're Layla right? Not everyday you get someone getting a partner in their first day here." I take my seat and Zack takes a seat next to mine. "What? Not going to sit at your usual table?" I ask. Zack pulls a face.
"No, I hate those two." I turn around to see Justin and Nick making there way here, I laugh at Beth's face. That serves you right for stealing my seat, b*tch.
"Hey, I'm Nick. Layla's partner." Jenna smiles enthusiastically and begins to introduce everyone at the table. "This is my partner Tiffany," she points to the blonde; grey eyed, pale, intimidating and tall girl who was obviously a vampire. "This..." She gestures to a dark haired boy and girl, the girl sporting yellow/golden eyes. "...is Alex and Katie. They're partners and mates. How perfect is that?" I think that these four would make good friends, except I'm wary of Tiffany; I'm not sure what to make of her.
I plug in my newly won I-pod into my doc and put it on shuffle. This is the life; I pick up a book and begin reading. A knock on the door startles me. "It's open." Nick glides into the room and leans against a wall. "What's up?"
"I was just wondering which one of your parents were a Guardian."
"Not sure, Dad died when I was young, don't even remember him. My mum is most likely to be though. She drilled me with self-defense, cross-country running, nature knowledge...She knew a lot of stuff, but I guess she could've learnt it from my dad if he was the Guardian...or they could both be, I'm not sure."
"Who is Sophie's father then?" I glare up at him, that's one of the few questions I hate. "Not sure." I say shortly. 'A drop in the ocean' comes on and I start singing along to the lyrics. Nick extends his hand to me. "I can't dance." I pout at him but take his hand anyway. "But I can. Didn't I tell you that I was the cool one in this relationship?" I roll my eyes.
Dancing with Nick is the most fun I've had in ages. We both end up on the floor packing with laughter. "If the girl inherits the throne what does the boy inherit in the fairy realm?" Nick sighed.
"If I stayed I would then become the general of the army."
"Why did you become an orb?" Nick turned on his side to face me.
"When the Titans started attacking the Quad we all decided to join the Guardians but we needed a way to make a strong alliance and that's when partners were created. People could volunteer to become one and that's what I did. I'm not royal material, I hated being told what to do, hated my whole life being planned out for me and this was my escape..." He's interrupted by a knock on the door. Zack walked in, "Ready to go to training?" Nick and I get up. "Can we quickly get a bite to eat?" I bat my eyes.
I walk into the dinning hall and there is a crowd by a table. Beth has her back to me and her voice rings out clearly, "...such a slut! That home wrecker isn't even pretty and she's trying to get her claws into Justin and she's been here, what, two days?" It doesn't take a genius to figure out that she's talking about me, am I going to take this without a word and be the better person...no, no I am not. "Spreading rumors about me, are you?" I interrupt her and the room goes dramatically silent. "Don't get me wrong, that's great! It's great to see you spreading something other than your legs." I hear Zack do one of his low whistles. Taylor stands up, furious. "Watch it, Layla!" Well if she wants to join in the conversation it would be rude of me not to include her so I add, "No I believe that Beth here is the one that needs to watch it - you - more specifically seeing as you're head over heels for her boyfriend." There are stunned faces throughout the room, I grab an orange and walk out the door, satisfied with myself.
