Chapter 9
Nick looks as though he's gone into shock. "I heard Justin call me that and then he said I was as good as dead. Nick what's a seeker?" I gently touch his arm and he flinches back into reality. Nick gives me a pained almost panicked look; he's always so calm so I'm suddenly unsure that I want to know the answer to my question. "A seeker...a seeker is born every few generations. There used to be two that worked together but one went rogue and joined the Titans. Tristan created them to track down Michael's stones. The necklace appears on the seeker's neck on their 15th birthday and on their 16th they have their first 'jump' - so to say- in which they track down one of the stones and return once they have." He pauses and I ask what happens if they don't return. "They are most probably dead then, they normally don't last long Layls." I pale and Nick grabs my hand and tells me that it's going to be OK, that he's going to help me prepare. After a while he coaxes me to the dining hall saying that we'll finish this conversation after I've had something to eat,
"Layla, are you OK?" Zack asks worriedly, I give a small nod and continue to push the food around on my plate. Nick hasn't touched his meal either. "Seriously, what's gotten into you two?" Justin demands and Nick glares at him. "What?" Justin asks him. "Maybe you're the problem." Nick shoots back at him, Justin stands up and so does Nick making the room go silent. "Maybe we should take this outside." Justin says dangerously.
"Maybe we should..."
"Oh will the two of you just give it a break!" I shout at them. I get up to go when Justin grabs my arm to try and talk to me, Nick takes a step towards me but I tell him it's OK. "Justin you have three seconds to remove your fingers. One. Two. Thr." His fingers unlock. "Wise boy." I say before I leave.
Back in Nick's room I wait for him to arrive, which doesn't take long. His door creaks open and he walks in. "Layla-" but he doesn't finish because I burst into tears. I am not a crier, I know crying never helps the situation but I couldn't help it. His arms are wrapped around me instantly and he is smoothing my hair, trying to reassure me. I'm not sure when but I fall asleep in his arms.
I wake up to find myself entangled with a sleeping Nick. I glance at my watch that reads 5:23 am. I missed training and dinner, not like I would've gone if I were awake anyways. "You're awake." Nick's voice huskily stated. I groan and then pull the covers back over my head. Nick chuckled, "Morning to you too sunshine." I emerge from the covers and Nick has a thoughtful look plastered on his face. "You know I've been thinking that your situation is quite odd: you're the seeker and yet you weren't raised knowing you were a Guardian and I'm sure the seeker was meant to be born in your parents generation it was actually meant to be Emma Sade — you know the woman that runs this institute - but the necklace never came to her. You have no relation to her do you." I shake my head, I figure that that must be why she doesn't like me. "My mother's maiden name was Gleen and my father's name is Winters so no, no relation. My mum knew what this is though," I say holding my locket. "She claimed it was a birthday present and that the S stood for Sophie so I could always have her with me, but if she knew that I was meant to bring down this Michael why didn't she tell me everything?" Nick sighs, "I'm not sure Layla."
He explains that on my 16th birthday I will 'jump' as he puts it and track down Michael's remaining three stones and his hexagon plank of wood, the other three stones have been found by previous seekers and are now in Tristan's care. He reassures me that I can do this, "Can you come with me?" Nick thinks for a moment. " I think I can...We'll ask Emma if there's a way. Damn I should've payed more attention in school." He tries to give me an encouraging smile.
"The Titan's seeker, how many stones have they found?" Nick smiles fades. "Well they have five stones and the pentagon plank." Woah, one stone and they've won. How the hell am I meant to find three stones as well as a pentagon plank in the time that they only take to find one? "What happens when I find all of them?" I'm not going to think the other way. I will find everything! He went on to explain that I return to the present time and Tristan will come and pick it up. When everything is collected we plan a full attack on Michael who will have his immortality stripped from him. He will finally be slain and we would've won the war. I sigh, this is a lot to take in. "Gym?" I ask him, I need a release before I go crazy.
