Chapter 21

The Guardian's Panel is made up of the leaders of the Quad, the leaders of the Guardians (I'm assuming), Tristan and his general (some guy called Vaal) and now me. "The stone?" Tristan asks. I grab it and slide it across the table. "Two more to go." Someone mutters. Though Tristan doesn't seem hopeful, "And the plank." There is an uncomfortable silence. Vaal steps up, "Layla we need all the details from your trip." I tell them everything, well everything they need to know (leaving out personal details like for instance how sexy Thorn was). "Mmmm...Their seeker has a partner.... Thank you for co-operation. You may leave."

I raise my eyebrow at Vaal. "So I'm going to be kept out the loop?" He walks around towards me, places a hand on my back and leads me to the door. "Your job is to find the stones and the plank, if you survive that then we'll involve you in our discussions until then it's a need-to-know basis..." He trails off and slams the door in my face before I can express myself which is probably a good thing since me and expressing equals a whole lot of anger and swear words.

Nick's voice acts as an inside navigator until I get back to my room. I find him chilling on my bed with this glazed look in his eyes. "Izzy's grown into such a beautiful Queen, don't you think?" I'm not really sure how to respond so I say something along the lines of "Ya, sure." I slide next to him which is when he actually snaps out of his little daydream to realize that I'm actually here. I ask him about how the hell he was able to get into my mind and also make me do stuff...that last bit still kinda had me freaked out a bit.

"Fairies are in-tuned with nature and we can therefore connect with the minds of other beings. Humans and the like are more difficult though, their emotions are stronger, they're more cautious and as a result most fairies can't get into their heads. You are looking at one of the few that can." He grins proudly but I don't think that he should, minds are not something that other people should have access to. It is a sanctuary that should never be breached. His smile falters, "Sorry, you're right." I'd almost forgotten he was still in mine. There is a sudden lift of pressure from inside my head and I sigh in relief.

Nick tells me that all wizards are able to do it. "But how come it didn't hurt when Tristan reading my thoughts but when you did it was like...bloody sore."

"Wizards can read people's surface thoughts without them knowing if they don't have any blocks up. To get into ones head that what causes the pain, you can't let anybody do that to you 'cause then they have the ability to control you're actions, find out you're deepest darkest secrets..." I sit up straight, alarmed. He laughs and assures me he didn't go borrowing into my memories because he had no interest of seeing Zack naked; even though Zack and I hadn't...you know....I still blush a deep shade of scarlet and punch Nick in the arm.

At breakfast I see Zack and Justin sitting at a table so I join them. I still feel terrible about what happened to him and he knows that to, he nudges my foot underneath the table. I manage a small smile and nudge back. Justin glares at me and in turn Nick glares at him. There is this claustrophobia that settles over me but it dissipates when Jenna and the rest of the gang join us and fill the table with loud chatter.

That night I go to Nick's room. "Layls? What you doing here?" His voice is thick with sleep. "Please teach me how to put mind blocks up."
