Hey everyone, sorry I haven't updated in a while but I've written two chapters for you. Enjoy (:
Chapter 10
We find Jenna, Tiffany, Alex and Katie warming up. "Hey," I say to all of them. We chat for a little bit and then I hit the treadmill along with the girls. Alex and Nick go off to the weights. Hard running is exactly what I needed to blow off steam.
"You're like a machine!" Tiffany exclaims as though she can't quite believe it. "I'm no-where near as fast as you," I say throwing her a smile and she actually smiles back. "Super speed is a vamp thing." Maybe exercise makes her a more approachable person. Alex swings his arm around Katie, "Enjoy your run, babe?" Planting a kiss on her cheek. "Get a room," Jenna says making a face that makes us all laugh. My stomach rumbles which causes more laughter. "Breakfast?" Jenna asks me and I quickly agree.
I sit with my friends, Justin is with Beth and Taylor but Zack makes his way to our table. "You didn't come to training yesterday." He asks me and I shrug. "Or dinner." He continues but I just mumble that I wasn't hungry. "Well we've decided that both you and Nick can join the rest of the students in the physical training." Jenna squealed with excitement and keeps going on and on about how great this is going to turn out. I glance at the adult table to find Emma glaring at me. I imagine what it must be like to grow up being told that you're destined for greatness, to be a seeker, to be the one to bring Michael down only to find out that some random girl named Layla Winters inherits it. I start to feel sorry for her and then remember a specific comment she's as good as dead and all my sympathy fades away. I'm back in the mood to punch someone.
Training with the others proved more satisfying then I thought. I'm put against Taylor in hand-to-hand combat and even though she's a werewolf I kick her ass. 'Anger is an essential fighting skill, Layla, remember that. Let it fuel you. Let it take over your body.' Taylor's face is living proof of my mother's words of wisdom. Justin's put against Nick, which I must say, is highly entertaining to watch. Justin just beats Nick but it was a close match. The match is over and Nick walks his way towards me, "What happened to your face?" I ask mockingly.
"I ran into a tool." Nick grumbles back and I burst out in laughter. Justin loses it and aims another punch at Nick, which he dodges. I step in front of Nick before this escalates, "I think you need to calm down Justin." Zack says to his partner in a smoothing tone. The instructor dismisses us from class, Justin storms off the first chance he gets.
I quickly catch up with him. "Justin, that was completely out of line." I tell him. He scowls at me, "Sorry, Princess, did I offend you?" He asks in a mocking tone. I scowl back at him. "I'm just warning you to lay off Nick." He scoffs
"That dick had it coming to him." I stiffen with anger; this is my partner he was talking about. I remind myself to keep my anger in check but then words play back in my head she's as good as dead. I snap and the next thing I know my hand is stinging like hell and Justin's cheek has an outline of my palm. I walk off before I do anything else that I might regret.
Zack comes by to check up on me. "So you slapped Justin."
"He told you?"
"No but when I saw his face I gave it my best guess. Sorry Justin can be a little...passionate sometimes." I try to apologize but Zack reassures me it's fine, he came by to see if we were still on for the annual ball, which was on Saturday night, two days away. I nod, why would I let him down now?
I knock on Justin's door before I lose my nerve and leave. "Beth I told you not now-" he cuts it short when he opens the door and realizes that I'm not his girlfriend. "Oh, it's you."
"Ya, it's me. Listen I just wanted to apologize for my behavior, it was completely out of line and I have no idea what came over me and-" he cut me off with his hand. "It's fine." I sigh with relief; glad I don't have to babble on like an idiot. I mumbled an OK and was about to turn and leave but he grabs my wrist. "Listen, Layla, please just do Zack a favor and stay away from him." I can't believe that I actually apologized to him. Who does he think to regulate who I am close to? "I believe that this is a conversation you need to have with Zack not me." I rip my wrist from his grip and leave.
