The rest of the day passed by as usual, I made breakfast for Will and myself, I did some chores, and Will went to his study to do some work. I was in the study with him, carelessly reading one of his books, when there was a ring at the doorbell. Will and I both looked up at each other, and I gave him an innocent look.
"Wait here. I'll get it" said Will as he went to answer the door. From the corner of the study, I saw Will open the door and Jake come inside. Will looked confused at first, but then Jake said something and Will relaxed and invited him in. I was dying to hear what they were saying, but I couldn't. Will slightly chuckled again as he shook Jake's hand and invited him inside. Wow, I thought. What could Jake have said to change Wills perception of him so quickly? I sat quietly, until Will led Jake into the living room and both of them disappeared out of sight.
About two minutes later, Will came back to the study and said to me,
"Hey Jake came by from next door, I was hoping you could make us some coffee and take out something to eat please." he said politely.
"Yeah sure." I said surprised. Will ran back into the living room, almost too excited to return to their conversation. What's that all about, I thought.
I went into the kitchen and began to make coffee. As I poured Will's coffee into the mug, I realized I forgot to ask Jake how he likes his coffee. Unsure of what to do, I slowly walked over to the living room where they were sitting and peeked inside.
"Um sorry to interrupt, but I forgot to ask, Jake, how do you like your coffee?" I said awkwardly.
"Just black if that's okay, and thank you." He said politely. I liked that gesture. I smiled and was about to walk back into the kitchen when I heard Will say,
"Yeah thanks a bunch honey!"What a faker, I thought. I turned around and rolled my eyes before going back to the kitchen.
I came back about 10 minutes later with two mugs of coffee and mini blueberry pies that I thawed and microwaved from the fridge. I was about to excise myself from the room when Will said,
"Hey Emi where are you going? Come join us!"I was puzzled. What was behind Will's sudden change of attitude? I sat down on the couch next to Will and smiled.
"Do you remember that day when it was pouring and coach told us we won? We were so happy until Alan told us that the other team had forfeited!" Will burst out excitedly and began to laugh, slapping his knee in the process.
"Dude! That was totally a bummer, I thought we had our best win of the season against the best team in the league" came the equally excited voice of Jake next.
Okay, what was going on here, I thought. How did the guy Will couldn't stand at his doorstep 2 days ago suddenly become his best friend? I gave both of them puzzling looks as I watched them exchange more stories and laughter.
When Will caught onto my confusion, he said,
"Oh Emi, I forgot to tell you. Guess what I just found out? Jake here, is my best friend from my hockey days back in middle school! I didn't even know it was him until he came by today and called me by the nickname he had for em back then-Puck Boy."My jaw genuinely dropped in surprise. They knew each other?! They were best friends?! I looked at Jake with surprise and he just smiled and nodded his head. This is such a blow, I thought. The one person I thought could get me out of here turned out to be Will's best friend! I excused myself and left the room, saying that I wanted to get a mug for myself. I ran into the the kitchen and began to cry over the sink.
