The time between birth and being able to roam around the forest with their mother went by quickly for Aspen and Aurora. They were easily mystified by the world; the blue and the violet and the deep shades of green. The movement of water, and of trees and other animals and the sky. The changing scents in the air and feeling of the warmth and the breeze.

They trembled constantly, not with fear but excitement. So many things were either so big or so small. Some things moved quickly and some things moved slowly. Some things sounded loud and some things sounded soothing. Some things smelled bold and some things smelled soft. Some shoots tasted sour and others tasted sweet.

But Aspen and Aurora didn't have any idea that for other creatures in the world, some things felt bad and some things felt good at this point. It didn't matter to them.

They did however, feel their very first spark of pride one day when their mother took them to see their father. Thea and her fawns stood at a distance, only watching and not disturbing Ryker and the fellow stags who accompanied him, but Aspen and Aurora could tell that he was the most majestic looking of the bunch. Their tiny eyes twinkled.

Following that day, the two fawns would often bound in their play, feeling they were entities like none other.

Then another day following that day, Aurora looked up and the colors that formed in the sky showed her story that had barely begun to be. Aspen listened to the rustling of the leaves in the summer breeze and the trees told her that she was her own soul.

This was their first awakening.
