Chapter 4.

“so what’s going on with you and Chase?” asked Lily, rolling over on to her stomach, we were at the south end of the beach lying in the sun, it was busy today as usual and the sound of kids playing filled the air

“What do you mean?” I replied leaning up to rest on my elbows

“Oh come on Summer!” she said sitting up “it is obvious there is something going on between you two”

I rolled my eyes “there is nothing going on! Were just...friends” I smiled at the thought of being with him, he made me forget everything that was going on and for a little while it was like it was before

“Summer” she said pointing at the grin on my face “I saw you at that party and trust me I have never seen Chase looking actually interested in a girl, that night he looked smitten” I didn’t know how to feel about that I mean I hardly knew him but I liked the way he made me feel and how comfortable I was around him but did I like him like that? Did he even like me like that? I wasn’t sure

“ok so maybe I think he’s cute and he’s a great guy but that doesn’t mean we are going to fall in love and live happily ever after” I joked laughing at Lily’s excited face

“you have to admit, it would be extremely sweet” she replied lying back down again, I rolled my eyes at her and put on my sunglasses, the sun was so bright today which meant at least one good thing I might get a decent tan

“I can’t believe it though, I mean Chase having feelings, that was something I thought would never happen”

“What do you mean?” I asked frowning at her

“Well he’s friendly and stuff but he can be a jerk when it comes to his dating life” she smiled when she saw what I imagined was a slightly disappointed expression on my part “don’t worry, he seems generally different with you” I punched her playfully in the arm

“ow!” she screamed rolling over in fake agony

“sssh!” I said laughing as people walking by started to stare

“help!” she continued to scream “she’s mad! she’s going to kill me!” I laughed uncontrollably as an old woman shook her head angrily at us as she walked by

“people are going to think I’m actually hurting you!” I whisper yelled to her, she finally stopped rolling around and lay still clutching her stomach as she shook with laughter

“so” she said when she caught her breath “are you seeing Chase at the bonfire tonight?”  Violet had told me about this apparently they let off fireworks here near the start of summer and at the end before all the kids and teenagers go back to school, I was going tonight with Livvie and Violet. I hadn’t actually spoken to Chase since the other night when he decided to knock on my window again.

“no, just with Livvie and Violet, who are you going with?” I asked, I didn’t actually know about Lily’s dating life

“well I am actually smitten” she smiled widely

“tell me more” I said resting my head on my hands looking up at her

“I’m smitten and completely in love with Nate” she replied dreamily then sighed “he just doesn’t know it and never will”

“Lily! Why don’t you tell him?” she rolled back over

“it's a long story, it doesn’t matter, were just friends” we stayed quiet for a moment and I looked at her disapprovingly “anyway more importantly what are you going to wear tonight?”
