"Hang on!"

The three of them held on and Carrie wrapped an arm around Billie as they hit another big wave. "Daddy!"

He grimaced. "Sorry."

"Dad why do we have to go out so far?" Adam asked, looking back at the shore far behind them.

"Lake trout like the cold water. So we have to go out in a 100 foot of water to find them. And the water temperature at the bottom is much colder than it is up here," Harrison explained.

"So the deeper the water, the colder it is at the bottom?"

"Yes."

After another 15 minutes, they slowed down. "Your grandpa used to take me fishing all the time for lake trout," Harrison told Adam as he turned on another fish finder.

"On this boat?"

He laughed. "No. When I was little grandpas boat was really small. Grandpa got an upgrade."

"Indeed he did," said Carrie.

Harrison's dad's new boat was built for fishing. It had a pilot house and a cabin where they would sleep overnight. Being able to go inside and close the door was nice when it was raining or cold. It came with four fish finders, two of which they used to see fish, the other two were used as radar and gps.

"Daddy's what's this?" Emma asked, pointed to a small screen on the dashboard.

"That is autopilot."

"You mean the boat drives itself?"

"It can."

"That's so cool."

He smiled, turning to Carrie as he slowed the motor down to about 2 mph. "Babe my first boat is going to be exactly like this."

"Uh huh."

"I'm serious."

Going out, he asked his kids, "Adam and Emma do you want to help daddy with something?"

"Yes!"

He pulled a box of lures out from the floor compartment. "Pick 6 of those out for daddy."

As the kids were doing that, he and Carrie started rigging up the down riggers. "What's that daddy?"

"This?"

"Yeah."

"It's a down rigger Emma. You know how I was telling Adam that the lake trout like it deep?" She nodded. "This gets the lure all the way to the bottom."

"How does it work?"

"I'll show you."

Carrie handed him one of the cannonballs that he attached the the steel line. Adam handed him the pole that now had the lure attached to it. "I like it buddy."

Adam picked out a light green that lake trout loved. He attached the lure to the down rigger line, let the line out of the pole and the down rugged go down. "Come here Emma."

Emma happily joined her father. "The depth here is 103 feet. We're going to set this at 100 feet so it will be right in front of their faces."

"Dad why is the boat still moving?"

"We're trolling Adam. Lake trout don't bite like perch do. They see the lure, get angry, and attack it."

"I get it. They don't like the lure then."

"They hate it."

After setting all the rods up, Harrison went back in the cabin and turned on autopilot as well as the fish hawk. "You guys want to see something cool?"
