"Look! There's one of the thunderpaths!" Squirrelpaw hissed to Brambleclaw. Thistlestar had crossed two of them with the clans since they left the moonstone. It had been only a few dawns since they left the forest, and he was feeling homesick. His family was around him though, and Spottedpaw had been hanging around with the Thunderclan cats again, and of course Tinypaw.
Instantly, Windclan ran to the front. They had agreed to go first since the first thunderpath they crossed, and Thistlestar held his breath as he watched Tunnelwhisker pad beside Gorseclaw. They had agreed to no longer be mates, that it would be better if they separated now then deal with the heart break later.
A big red twoleg den, a barn like Barley's, sat in the distance. The mountains loomed above it, and a couple of twoleg dens clouded the area.
"Now!" Crowpaw's yowl cut through his thoughts. He watched as the cats sprinted across, his heart racing. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw all the cats had made it.
His relief was gone when he saw a lump of fur tottering on four paws in the middle of the thunderpath.
"Windkit!" Morningflower shrieked, sprinting towards her kit. A roar sounded in his ears and the earth shook. A monster was coming.
Ferncloud sprinted towards her, confusing him. The racing monster was on one side of the thunderpath, towards Windkit and Morningflower, so why was Ferncloud pushing so hard? Morningflower would make it, he knew she would.
"Morningflower!" Ferncloud screeched, watching as the she-cat scooped up and tossed her kit towards her. Ferncloud barely caught the small kit by her scruff, and Thistlestar saw its jaws open in a squeal but the sound was muted by the roaring thunder from the monster. It sped across the thunderpath, Morningflower lying in its dust.
Ferncloud raced back towards Windclan, carrying the kit carefully. In the gap between monsters, Thistlestar let out a yowl, leading his clan quickly across. He grabbed Morningflower's scruff, helping hold her with Cloudtail. He was panting when they finally set her upon the soft grass. Her breaths were coming in shallow and fast, a trickle of blood coming from her nose.
As cats crowded around to see her, Shadowclan raced across, Riverclan on its paws as the thunderpath was silent for only a moment after words. Soon the clans were crowded around. Morningflower opened her jaws weakly.
"Ferncloud? Ferncloud where are you?" She whispered, and Thistlestar spotted the she-cat with Morningflower's kits a row back. Thistlestar called her over with a flick of her tail. She pushed her way through the hordes of cats with the kits at her paws.
"Ferncloud... Thank you so much for being close to me. You had me help you with the kits and you made me happier than I have been when Goldenflower decided to stay.." Thistlestar eyes widened. Was she delusional? Windkit and Dawnkit were hers.
"These are your kits, what are you talking about? They need their mother.." Ferncloud whispered, barely audible to Thistlestar.
"They have one, Ferncloud, You." She breathed, her tail twitching. Joy and sadness welled in her eyes as her body gave one last spasm. Her chest stopped rising and her tail lay flat.
"Say goodbye, little ones. Morningflower was always nice to you, now you must be nice to her in return." Ferncloud rasped, nosing the kits forward. The touched their tiny noses to her fur, uncertain of what to say, when Dawnkit raised his head.
"Thank you for helping raise us, Morningflower. We will never forget you." Every cat sat quietly when tallstar stepped forward.
"We need to carry her somewhere to sit vigil and bury her. It would be disrespectful to bury her here." With a nod, a couple Windclan cats picking up her body. We carried to her a large tree, not as big as oak but with a nice thick trunk. Tallstar pointed with his tail and a couple of cats began to dig.
