I won’t be sleeping here all the time, M.J. I live far away, in a city called Boston. But I’ll come visit, and you guys can come see me. You need to meet your Grandma Knight, and your aunts and uncles and cousins.” Jordan turned to
Steph. “Speaking of which, would you mind if I called my mother? She’ll be so excited to hear about all this.”
“Go ahead,” she replied, still trying to digest everything. She sat the table. Marcie was talking to Donnie and Joe, while Marcel discussed his book with Uncle Jon.
“Speaking of sleeping, we need to find a motel,” Danny realized.
“I can put some of you up at my house,” Michelle replied.
Jordan returned to the table. “If Steph doesn’t mind, I’d like to stay here,” he said, feeling a bit shy. “I can sleep on the floor.”
“No. Marcel’s room has bunk beds. You can share with him. Anyone else? I have a great Shrek sleeping bag for rent,” Steph quipped.
“Um, I’ll stay here,” Jon volunteered. Steph smiled at him. She had hoped he would stay. She wanted a chance to talk to him later.
“Good. Let’s move our bags from Jon’s car into Michelle’s.” The guys all went down to the parking lot.
“I should be angry with you. You had no right to go through my mail!” Steph mumbled to Michelle.
“Hey, I didn’t ‘go through your mail’. That letter was in the same drawer as your Clean and clear, remember?” Michelle hissed.
“Yes, but you did open the letter and read it,” Steph reminded her. She smiled and hugged Michelle. “Thank you so much, Shelly. He really seems to want to be a part of their lives.”
“What about your life?” Michelle asked. Steph looked away.
“I don’t know, Shelly. It’s great to see him, and he still turns my insides to Jell-O, but I am just so confused. It would be great if we could someday be a real family, but I want it to be for all the right reasons.”
“He does seem sincere, though it pains me to say it,” Michelle admitted. “Just be careful, okay?”
“Oh, don’t worry. This is not something I’m going to rush into,” Steph reassured her.
The guys came back upstairs. Jon and Jordan put their bags in Marcel’s room.
“Mommy, can we take Daddy down to the playground?” Marcie asked. A kind of shock went through Jordan as he realized that every time one of the twins said Daddy, they meant him.
“And Uncle Jon, too?” Her brother added, including his new favorite person.
“If they want to go.”
“Let’s all go,” Danny said. They all went out the door again.
I’ll be right down!” Steph hollered after them. She began to clean up the sandwich wrappers, but soon she just sat down on a chair. She felt so overwhelmed by everything that had happened in a few short hours.
“Hey, Stephi, do you…” Jon burst through the door. He saw her sitting at the table with her head buried in her arms, and rushed over. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“Yes, Jon, I’m fine. I’m just trying to figure everything out.”
“I don’t have to stay here tonight, if you’d rather be here alone with Jordan.” He softly brushed her hair away from her face.
“But I don’t know if I want to be alone with Jordan!” She said without thinking. “I mean, not that I’m afraid of him, but, oh, never mind.”
“Steph, Its gonna be …” Jon stopped himself. He couldn’t reassure her anything was going to be ok if he wasn’t sure of it himself. He took her hand. “Leave this stuff. Let’s go outside and play,”
She grabbed her coat and they went down to the apartment playground. Donnie was pushing Michelle on a swing. Danny and Joe were hanging upside down from the monkey bars, and Jordan was chasing his son and daughter around the jungle gym.
“What do you think is going on with ‘Michelle and Donnie?” Jon asked Steph as they watched everyone.
“I don’t know. I think she kind of forgot how attracted to him she once was.”
“Looks like they’re both remembering,” he observed, as Donnie helped Michelle off of the swing.
Marcel ran over to them. “Mommy, come play with us! We’re playing tag!” He started to pull her hand.
“Come on, Uncle Jon!” Steph challenged grabbing Jon’s hand.
