"I don't know…why don't you open it and see?" When she opened it and saw the books, she squealed with delight. She found Jordan in the living room and hugged him. "You're not mad?"
"No! That was so sweet of you!"
"Well, you used to say that I was trying to buy you, and I…"
"I've grown up a lot since then, Jordan. So have you And I can't see you trying to buy me."
"I'm glad you like them." He held her close.
They spent the rest of the afternoon being lazy, just watching TV and talking. At around seven, Jordan went out to cook some steaks on the grill, and Steph called the twins. Jon put them on speakerphone.
"Mommy!" Marcie shouted, then proceeded to talk nonstop for ten minutes. She laughed until her sides ached.
"Wonder who she gets THAT from?" Jon said in the background.
"Ha ha," Steph replied. "How are you, Marcel?"
"Good. We went to Uncle Jon's house today. It's on a mountain!"
Jon picked up the phone. "So are the two of you behaving yourselves?"
"No," she replied.
"Good. Do you guys wanna come up for dinner tomorrow?"
"Let me check with Jordan." She walked out onto the patio. She gave Jordan a big kiss, then said, "Jon wants us to come up to Boston for dinner tomorrow."
"Sounds good. We'll drive up and stay over, then drive back Thursday morning."
"Jordan says cool," She told Jon.
"Great you can spend some time with our Mom “
"Your mom? I don't know," she said nervously as she went back into the house.
"What's the big deal? She wants to get to know the mother of her grandchildren."
"But.”
"And that's exactly why she'll love you. Believe me, she's totally on your side. She has given Jordan hell a hundred times since he told her about the twins."
"Good," Steph chuckled, liking her already.
They decided on dinner at seven and said goodbye. The night wasn't too cool, so Jordan and Steph sat at the picnic table in back of the house. "Your mom want to spend time with her” she told him nervously as they sat down to eat.
"Nervous?"
"A little. I've been raising her grandchildren for nine years. She might not approve of how I've done."
"You've done a fabulous job." He picked up her hand and kissed it.
What if she doesn’t think I’m good enough for her baby boy?
He tried to take her in his arms, but she refused to let him do it. He firmly held her face in his hands. "Stephi, listen to me. She knows all about you because of that summer, and also about the letters you and Jon kept. When I tell her everything that's happened, I’m gonna be the one who will look bad, not you." She didn't respond but seemed to relax. "Now, sit down and eat! I didn't grill all that food for my health!"
They sat back down and finished their meals. Jordan had put a small radio on the table, and the local top 40 station started three hours of continuous love songs. When Steph stood to take her dishes into the kitchen, Jordan grabbed her arm. He took the dishes out of her hands and put them on the table again. "Dance with me," he said, pulling her into his arms.
"Do I have a choice?" she asked, laying her head on his shoulder.
They moved in silence for a while, then Jordan asked, "What's going to happen after this week?"
She stopped dancing. "What do you mean?"
"These last few days have been magical. What happens when we go back to our real lives?"
"Nothing's gonna change, Jordan. I'll still love you." She cupped his face in her hands. "I know it won't be easy. You'll be away a lot, and I have two children who are, basically, my life." She softly kissed him. "But I want to try and make this work."
