friend

are you real?
ethereal.
I shift in my stance.
your cheeks are blushing red,
your eyes are wet like dew,
your aura is fresh and alive.
lemon and lime.
you smell like lemon and lime.

and when you fidget, I swear
I can see your smile twist with sadness.
as if there is more to you than I see.
oh, won't you share it with me?
rose and basil.
you smell like rose and basil.

you're a guiding light,
a current in the waves.
surreal.
and sometimes it seems
like I can hear your heartbeat.
why is it so loud?
citrus and lavender.
you smell like citrus and lavender.

and you have your own feelings.
valid as mine.
and when they're hurt,
I see you cry.
cinnamon and raspberry.
you smell like cinnamon and raspberry.

so why do they tell me you aren't real?
you aren't imaginary,
you never were.
I find it hard to believe
that all those times I confided in you,
none of it was real.
all these scents that I've caught,
they're you, I can tell.
don't lie to me.
come out, come out.
it's time to talk.
about what you've done,
and if it's false.
