shade

she said,
"why be so honest when
there's more to see?
you're a pathetic Shakespeare wannabe.
and if you think that poetry
is the way to my heart,
you're lying to yourself--
I'm a work of art."

and she's conceited but I
confess I love her,
even when she plays me like
she would a boy.
no, she doesn't deserve it
or my heart,
but she's just playing a part.

she said,
"sometimes it's best to mess around.
getting drunk and running
the hometown.
and if you think that rules will
do you any good,
I know you'd break a few
if you could."

and she's conceited but I
confess I love her.
even when she admits I'm just a
test subject.
yeah, put me in a vial and fill it with
poison, since I've been
anti-venom for too long.
no, she's no overdose
or a drug,
but she's all I got 'cept luck.

she said,
"it's not a joke,
I promise you.
why would I lie?
it's not for fun,
you and I.
so call me if you need me and
I'll drive."

and she said,
"why would I lie?
hate to break it to you
but my name should be Joe King,
'cause I'm confused about my
sexuality and used you just
to try it out."
