3rd Person POV
"It's only about fifteen floors down!" a voice shouts from down below.
The (h/c)-haired female shakes her head. "There is no way I am jumping down," she states.
"Would you rather burn alive?" they ask, bringing attention to the roaring flames behind her.
"It's either I die by falling or I die by burning! I die either way!" she screams from the window's ledge.
They rub their temples and flick their brightly-coloured hair behind their shoulder. "I jumped, ya idiot. I'm still," they spread their arms to show their body. "Fairly well. I didn't collapse unconscious, and I'm sure as hell that I ain't dead."
Heat claws at the female's back as she teeters on the edge. "I blame you and your horrible cooking skills!"
"Why did you trust me in making cookies?!"
"Cookies aren't that hard to bake!"
"Well, they are now, aren't they!?!"
"Katelyn, no one bakes cookies and burns their home down in one go, m'kay? So don't go and give me your sass! I'm the one burning up here!" (Y/n) shouts angrily.
"You won't jump! Your life is on the line and you're fighting me about jumping out a window!" Katelyn protests.
(Y/n) sighs. 'I'm never gonna live this one down...'
As soon as she steps back into the apartment, Katelyn yells, "And where are you going?! You're going to die!"
"There's no way I'm jumping!" (Y/n) runs through the burning kitchen, flames licking at her feet.
The annoying ringing from the smoke alarm does nothing to help the coughing female who's trying desperately to not breathe in too much smoke.
She quickly jumps over a few pieces of furniture, inching closer to the door that leads to the hallway.
Her legs give out halfway through a step. The female's breathing becomes jagged, shaky and uneven. Hands trembling and lips quivering, she pulls herself to her feet.
'Calm down. The door's right there... hurry...'
She coughs again before her eyes start to water. The smoke from the burning oven becomes thicker, preventing (Y/n) from seeing the door anymore.
'I refuse to let it end like this...' she starts to cough violently, smoke filling her lungs and refusing to let her breathe. 'I refuse to die because of Katelyn's crude kitchen skills.'
The door comes back into sight as the smoke thins out in one spot.
'Keep going, don't stop.'
The plain front of the door comes into view, but a shriek stops her from taking a step forward.
Screams fill her ears, and she covers them to block out the noise.
'Don't panic, (Y/n), everything's going to be okay...'
She reaches her arms out to feel for the door. Desperate, she falls to her knees and starts to crawl towards the direction she last saw the door.
'Help...'
The screams become louder.
(Y/n) frantically feels around for anything. A door, a wall, anything to tell her that she's close.
Her hand brushes against something burning hot, but round.
'It's the doorknob, you idiot. Open the damn door!'
Relief floods through her body, and she turns the handle.
But it wouldn't budge.
The screams are painful now, becoming louder by the second.
(Y/n)'s POV
Panic settles into my chest. I slam into the door with my shoulder, ignoring the searing pain emitting from my palm.
'This can't end like this...'
Another scream makes me jump, but this time, it seems closer.
My vision blurs, and I slump up against the door. Eyes stinging and throat burning, the room gets darker.
'Please...'
Light blinds me, momentarily hiding the monstrous flames coming for me.
'Don't let me die...'
Everything goes silent.
That was when I realized, the screaming...
Was me.
