~Chapter 20~
(Edited/Add-on)I press my back against the door, desperate to keep the Crazies on the other side. The cold bite of the wind hits my bare legs, and I look down to see that I'm only wearing a sheer white dress that barely reaches my knees.
Another body slams into the door causing me to jerk forward and stumble a few steps before I'm able to steady myself. Turning, I see the door burst open as shadowy bodies spill from the darkness.
My feet are already moving before I could tell them to, but soon they skid to a stop when I reach the edge of the building.
Looking behind me, the Crazies slowly stalk towards me, knowing I have nowhere to go.
"Please." I try to plead with them, but of course, it falls on deaf ears.
The closest one reaches out with his long graceful fingers. My heart thuds painfully in my chest as I follow the lean muscles up his arm and up to his flawless face.
Even turned, he's still perfection.
His once steel-gray eyes are now tainted with the sickness as he stares down at me with that animalistic hunger.
"Owen." I whimper as he takes a step away from the others, his hand still reaching out to me. I instinctively step away from him and feel the edge of the building under my barefoot.
I glance over my shoulder at the void of darkness behind me and feel my heart accepting what's about to happen before the thought fully registers within my mind.
Turning back to Owen, I reach my hand out, just barely encountering his hand. "I love you," I whisper one last time before stepping out into the void.
I jerk away with my hand still reaching out in front of me. Only feeling the stale air around me, I curl my hand into a fist before letting it fall lifelessly to my lap. I close my eyes again and take a few deep breaths to calm my racing heart.
Different location but the same ending.
I push the images away and force my body to get up off the leather couch and make my way into North's bedroom. I reach over to flix on the switch next to the door and wait for the light to brighten the room.
But nothing happens.
Guess it'll be three days in the dark this week.
Sighing in frustration, I slide my hands against the wall to navigate through the darkness to the dresser against the far side of the room, being extra cautious not to smack my knee on the corner again. I quickly find the candle and lighter I placed here after the first blackout and light it up.
The small flame bathes the area around me in a soft glow, and I catch the light reflecting off the mirror attached to the dresser in front of me. Looking up, I see how thin my face has become over the last four months, putting me right back to the place I was before my boys made me healthy. Guilt twists in my stomach when I think about how disappointed they will be when they see that I haven't taken care of myself as I should.
I've even forgotten to eat a few times since this hell started.
My eyes drift from my slightly hollow cheeks to the large scar under my right eye. I lightly trace the almost inch long indention running from the outer edge of my eye and down across my cheekbone. A physical reminder of the worst day of my life.
"Sang." A squeak of surprise escapes me as I quickly spin around to face the door. Erica looks back at me with amusement lighting up her green eyes.
