"what the hell, Jaime?" you groaned, rolling over to glance at my clock. 4:10AM. "Jaime...do you even know what time it is?"

"of course i know what time it is, Hermosa," he chuckled, then sucked in a deep breath. "i love you, [y/n]."

"um. okay? i knew that already?" you chuckled, finding this quite amusing. "how much did you have to drink?"

"what! [y/n] –" he coughed several times.

"Jaime are you okay?" you asked, concerned.

"yeah, i'm fine. just – i think i'm falling sick."

you laughed. "did you overdose on your meds?"

"[y/n], i love you."

"i know, jaime." you smiled

you felt your eyelids growing heavier, and the sleepiness set in again. you yawned, and Jaime definitely caught that.

"thank you so much for being in my life [y/n] – i just – i can't even begin to express how happy you make me and how i appreciate you so much, and i will never forget how beautiful you look when you're smiling, and how adorable you are whenever you are annoying me or whining." he chuckled. "thank you for being there for me –" he coughed again, and when he went back to talking, his breathing was deep and irregular. "i just – i love you so much and i want you to know that and i want you to know you're the most beautiful girl on this planet and you deserve everything. you mean the world to me and i love you more than anything, and i'm so sorry i never got to tell you."

he finished, waiting for a reply, but it never came. he waited, and he waited. he never got his reply, and the line went dead.

you woke up the next day and noticed your phone laying on your pillow beside you. you glanced at it curiously – what was it doing here? and then you remembered – Jaime called you last night. Jaime, that dork, you shook your head, a small smile playing on your lips. you got up to brush your teeth. you could remember what Jaime said – his confession last night. although you were still confused about why he had so randomly called you up at four in the morning, you couldn't say you didn't like it. although, you couldn't understand why he had said, "i never got to tell you". tell me what? you walked out of your toilet and started dialling Jaime on your phone. you had to tell him you loved him too, as you didn't get to tell him that. you wanted to tell him after his "speech", but you had fallen asleep.

"you have reached the jaime reyes' voicemail! (bart, shut up – give me back my phone!) please leave a message at the tone!" you chuckled at Jaime's voicemail, and tried calling. again. and again. and again.

you frowned. he wasn't picking up? "whatever. i'll call bart."

he picked up on the third ring. "[y/n]. we need to talk."

you rushed to happy harbour pier like bart told you to. when you got there, you noticed he wasn't alone, but was with two other teenagers – a redhead with freckles, and a blonde girl. you looked at him questioningly, your worry only growing.

"bart? where's Jaime—"

"[y/n]." bart placed a hand on your shoulder. you looked up and met his eyes. he sighed, and lowered his gaze. "Jaime – he – he always wanted to tell you, but he never got the chance –"

he turned away abruptly, and you felt your stomach drop. never got the chance? what?

the blonde decided to take over. "Jaime – he was the blue beetle."

you gasped. Jaime? the blue beetle? how –

"and last night, on a mission, he – he took a fatal blow," she whispered. "i'm sorry."

you felt your heart stop. fatal blow? "are you – are you fucking with me –" you felt your heart clench and you let out a sob. his midnight call came back to you. it all made sense now, why he called you to tell you he loved you. he waited for a reply but he didn't even get to hear you say you loved him for the last time.
