Sophie's POV
"Tomorrow I'm finally coming out of the hospital," I whispered to myself.
"I wish I had time to enjoy the vacation like a normal twelve year old," I sobbed.
The nurse and my parents came through the hospital's doors and my mother came rushing to me.
"Sweetheart, wipe your eyes because tomorrow your going to see all your friends," My mom smiled and kissed me on my cheek.
The passed few days I spent in the hospital, I was to weak to walk because I have Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A terrible sickness that make you feel so weak, even sometimes I'm too weak to walk. I remember lying in the hospital bed thinking I might die or what if I never saw Kaleb again.
Kaleb is my dearest friend, I remember seeing him for the first time, I had the biggest crush on him. Kaleb had black hair, bright brown eyes and glasses. One day at school, I decided to talk to him for the first time, I was very shy at first but after a while we always talked to each other. He very kind, caring and hilarious. Kaleb always know how to cheer me up when I'm down. From that moment we became best friends. Kaleb didn't know about my condition nor did he know I had a crush on him. I was afraid to tell him so I didn't.
---------------FLASHBACK---------------
The first day of school started and I was so excited. I saw Kaleb looking for something so I snook behind him and shouted, "ELLLOOO!!" I was so excited so I gave him a hug and a bright smile. I wish I could of told him what I did for the vacation but I couldn't. I didn't want him to worry. The bell rang and we headed to assembly. "If I told him will he still see me as a normal girl? Will he still be my friend?" These thoughts constantly ran through my mind causing me to have a headache.
"Are you okay Sophie? You don't look to well." Kaleb said looking at me with a worried face. I responded, "Yeah..let's go to class." And we both went to class.
I saw the new teacher, standing in front of the black board and she asked us to write about our vacation. I thought that I should tell the teacher about my problem so if I ever miss school she would understand why. I wrote:
What I did over the vacation
I didn't do much over the vacation due to my problem. I was constantly worrying if I was going to see my loved ones again. You see, I have A.L.S and I had to do surgery over the past month. I couldn't walk at first but I'm doing much better now. I wish I could spend my summer with my best friend.
After 20 minutes, the teacher collected the papers and read them out loud.
"I don't want her to read them. I didn't want Kaleb to know!" I thought so I got up to talk to the teacher.
"Miss can I talk to you it's urgent," I said then she responded, "Lets go outside and talk." then we both went outside to talk.
"Excuse, Miss John." I started
"I don't want you to read my letter because I don't want my friends to know."
"To know what dear? Is everything Alright?" She said in a worried tone.
"I have A.L.S. A sickness that make you weak and unable to walk. I spent my vacation in the hospital, I don't want my classmates to know because they might think of me differently." I sobbed.
"It's okay dear, I wouldn't tell them but you should tell them soon if they're your good friends. They would understand." She smiled then we headed back to class and I took my seat.
"Kaleb I got something to tell you." I told Kaleb.
"Tell me after she reads your story but what did you tell the teacher?" He said but I ignored him.
After the teacher reads everyone's story, Kaleb asked, "Why didn't she say your--" then the bell sounded.
Everyone ran outside to play and I ran away from Kaleb. I sat under the giant oak tree and cried, "I am twelve years old, I have a bad condition and now I ran away from my best friend. I am a terrible person, I should probably tell him right now." I got up and looked for Kaleb. I saw him on the ground with a scar on his face. "Oh no!" I shouted. One or two teachers carried him to the nurse's room and I followed.
The nurses wrapped a cloth around his head and exited the room. "Kaleb! Wake up! " I shouted then he looked at me as if he had never seen me before. He got up, put on his glasses and started shouting at me,"Why did you run away!!"
I suddenly felt weak and dizzy I could barely hear what he was saying.
"Kaleb I- I- I- can't tell you," I said in a faded voice. Then he shouted, "Leave me alone!! Get out!!" I ran outside and sobbed. I started to feel really weak then I fell on the ground. I couldn't stand up. My heart was beating fast, I was lying on the ground with my eyes closed and tears in my eyes . I had no control for my body.
"Beep....Beep ... Beep, " the only sound I heard.
"Am I dead?" I muttered suddenly I opened my eyes. I was at the hospital. I heard my mother crying from the outside the hospital room saying, "She don't have much time left, our little girl."
I couldn't move. "I'm going to die. I'm going to die." That song constantly played over and over my mind. I don't have much time.
I lied on the hospital bed, looking at the ceiling. Motionless. I might be in the hospital longer than I was before.
