I quickly climbed back into the front seat of the car, ignoring Lucy and George's questioning stares as I started the engine.
"What's going on?" Lucy asked.
"Nothing" I replied bluntly, forcing myself not to look over at Josh who was still outside the car.
George and Lucy stayed quiet in the back and the tension grew, I shook my head and rested my head on the steering wheel.
I waited in silence until Josh finally climbed into the front passenger seat and without saying a word I slowly put my foot on the accelerator. I breathed a small sigh of relief as the tyres gripped to the snow and we began moving.
The awkward silence in the car was almost unbearable so I turned the radio on quietly, concentrating on the lyrics to the song that was playing.
I was pretty unsure about where we were going but I drove in what I felt was a straight line, in the large openings between the trees. The road was completely hidden by snow so I had no idea if I was heading in the right direction, I just hoped we would reach a main road soon.
I saw a few horses huddling together under trees and I felt really bad for them, out here in the snow without any shelter. I turned my focus back to the 'road' in front of me and noticed it was starting to narrow, with ever increasing dips on either side.
I made sure I drove in the centre of the track and concentrated on not getting too close to either edge of the 'road'.
"Are you mad at me?" Josh asked suddenly, breaking my concentration from the driving.
I knew George and Lucy would be listening from the back but I forced myself not to look in the mirror at them.
I sighed and shook my head, turning my head to look at him. "Of course I'm not mad at you" I assured him, not really knowing what I was feeling right now.
"Why did you leave me so quickly back then?" He asked, his voice quiet and soft.
"Josh, remember what we said? We are just friends" I replied, turning my head to look at him.
"Friends can't kiss each other?"
"Not in the way you and I would have kissed. You know I love you Josh, I am trying so hard to get over you. This isn't helping" I sighed.
"You want to get over me?" He questioned, his voice sounding hurt.
"I need to, Josh"
"Why?"
"Because we can't be together!" I replied, my voice raising as I spoke. "This is hurting me so much, to be so close to you but know that I can't have you"
"Well, I don't..."
"LILY LOOK OUT!" Lucy shouted from the back of the car, making me jump and focus my attention on the road in front of me. My eyes widened as I saw a horse standing right in our path, I slammed on the brakes but they skidded on the snow, the car not stopping at all.
The horse lifted her head and her eyes met mine. I spun the wheel round as my foot stayed firmly on the brake and we flew off the path before everything went black.
