"Honey, I'm going out to the shops, do you need anything?" asked my mum.

"No, I'm good thanks," I replied slouching on the couch. I reached for the television remote.

"Maddie, don't turn to the TV as soon as I'm gone! Go do your homework or study for a bit!" said my mum snatching the remote before I could reach it.

"Oh Mum! I did all my homework and my exams finished a week ago!" I complained.

"Fine. I'm leaving now. Where's my car keys?" said my mum, tipping her bag over, causing everything to fall out.

"Umm. Mum, they're here..." I said as I picked up the keys and jingling them.

"You should have said before!" said my mum putting everything back.

"Right Mum, ok I'll do it," I said getting up from my comfortable position and reaching for the things under the wooden table.

"Thank you darling. Bye, and don't forget, don't open the door to anybody! It's getting late now," she said, as she rolled up her sleeve to peer at her watch.

"Mum! I'm sixteen! I know what to do, and it's only nine o'clock, but what about Steve? How will he get in?" I asked, as I gave the things back to her. Steve was my step-dad.

"He's got keys to the house so he shouldn't knock but if he does, he will ring you and tell you to open the door," she answered, as she opened the door and walked up to the car.

I shivered seeing as it was cold, windy and dark and then said: "Ok, bye Mum, love you!"

"Bye!" shouted my mum back waving. Then she geared up a speed and zoomed off.

I shut the door with a big slam. I bolted the locks and went back to my warm couch re-positioning myself. I reached for the remote and turned the TV on. The colours on the TV flashed and made blink my eyes a few times. I then switched the channel to News Round but I didn't feel like watching that. I switched the channel again and some more boring programs came up. I sighed and switched the TV off all together. I decided to go get a book and eat something while being nice and warm with the blankets. I smiled at this thought and went to the kitchen to make myself something to eat but before I could open the cupboard drawers, I heard a RINGG coming from the doorbell.
