“I’m so sorry,” Bella repeated as we had gotten well away from the place.

“OK look, it’s not your fault. We don’t even know if she’s dead yet,” I said, although we both knew she was.

“It was thanks to Kate that you found me. I was trying to get your attention, but I mean, I couldn’t seeing as I was all tied up,” said Bella.

“Yeah, she’s a smart girl. I didn’t even realize that when she said up in the trees she was referring to you. Smart move,” I said smiling. I frowned suddenly. I had promised these girls that no-one would die.

“It’s not your fault either, you know,” Bella said. “It was either all of us dead or just her.”

“OK, look I seriously don’t want to talk about it. Just tell me everything that happened,” I said.

“When you and Sophia went off, so did me and Lydia. She told me she knew where all the fruit was and so I followed.” She started.

“Right.”

“So, we picked the fruit and then went back to Violet and Kate,” she said.

“Oh my God. Where is Violet? That poor girl better be alright!” I said.

“Just let me finish. You’ll be pretty surprised to hear what she did. So, as I was saying, we went back. Violet suddenly needed a pee, so Lydia told her to hide between the bushes somewhere behind the tree. She listened and as soon as she was gone, Lydia said that the best place to sit was up in the trees,” said Bella.

“Go on,”

“Of course, there was something fishy about that so I didn’t listen. Lydia got mad and pulled out a small dagger and held it up to Kate’s throat. Kate was startled and Lydia told me that unless I went up the tree, she would kill Kate.”

“Wow, I did not see that coming.” I said.

“I obediently went up, as she came after me and tied me up. Kate tried to defend herself, but Lydia was much stronger. She got something out of her pocket and made her drink it. That’s what made her go all loopy.”

“What about Violet?”

“She returned and then left with Lydia.”

“What? Did she force Violet?” I asked curiously.

“No, she was going to kill her but Violet told her she knew some things that the rest of us didn’t and that she was useful,”

“Really!? Like what?” I asked.

“She didn’t say. But I bet she was lying,” replied Bella.

“She is going to have one ugly death if she is,” I told her.

“Yeah,” she agreed. “Where did Sophia go though?”

“I really don’t know. Did you see where she went, I mean, you were in the trees,” I said.

“Well, I saw her take the map then she slowly went behind the tree and the next thing I know, she’s gone,” she explained.

“She probably went off with Lydia,” I said. I stopped in my tracks. “Did you see Kara return? I mean she went off by herself, right?”

“No, she never returned. But I have a nasty feeling she went with the others,” Bella said.

“Well, we can’t trust anyone. No-one at all. It’s just me and you now,” I said.

“Yeah, it is. I bet they only played nice for so long until they had found that map. Do you even remember anything at all on the map? Like a clue or something?” she asked.

“Yea, there was an ‘X’ in the corner of the page, but that was it,” I said miserably. “I should have kept it. Ugh, I’m so stupid!” I said throwing my hands up in the air.

“Well do you remember where the ‘X’ was?” she said calming me down.

“Sort of. It was at the top of page,” I said trying to remember.

“Maybe the map was a fake, just a piece of litter some child left behind,” said Bella.

“I don’t think so. Sophia was really eager to go, she expected me to leave you guys behind and go with her,” I said.

We stopped and sat down near a tree.

“But who made the map?” she asked.

“Well, Sophia was telling me about some kind of camp he set up. She said that they had to pair up and help each other survive,” I explained.

“So, maybe one of the pairs made the map?” She said.

“Exactly,” I answered. “She also told me that she has never come across a single pair or person. I think that was a lie too.”

“Then, maybe that means that her and Lydia have been fighting off pairs since the start,” she exclaimed. “Did she mention what the final pair would get?”

“I don’t think so,” I said attempting hard to trace back our conversation.

We stood up and walked some more.

“Um, not to be rude or anything, but do you even know where we are going?” she asked.

“Yea, just down there, I think down there is some fruit or something,” I answered. I sighed. “No.”

“Should we turn around?” Bella asked.

“Well, you know this forest better than me. What do you think?”

“I have never been to this part of the forest. If we turn back, there’s a chance we might meet them,” she said.

I didn’t know which ‘them’ she meant; Lydia’s group or my dad, but either way was dangerous.

“Let’s do it anyway.”
