I hurried on to walk with Isabella again. She was happily chatting to Violet, as if we were going on a simple trip, but it was nowhere near that. We were stranded in the big woods. I tried not to think about it as much, but it was hard.
“So, do you like swimming?” I heard her say. “I do, but I prefer cooking and nature watching.” She said.
“Any luck Bella?” I asked.
“Yes. I know these woods very well. The only part I don’t know is the outside.” She said tactfully.
“Okay. Found the lake?” I asked again.
“It should take about five minutes to get there.”
“Good,” I replied.
Ten minutes later, we were all sitting around the lake. It was very clear so we could see what was in it, but the bottom was very black. Kate was about to lean over and drink it but Isabella stopped her.
“No!” she cried. “Careful, I think it’s deep and it might not be clean.” She warned.
“So we’re going to stay thirsty for days, are we?” questioned Kara.
“No, we’re going to check the water.” said Isabella.
“But how?” I said.
“Easy,” she said. “First, we can check the depth by chucking something in the lake, and seeing how far under it will go,” she said explaining and as she did, she chucked a near by rock and she looked into the lake.
“It’s very deep. You fall in and you could die, if you aren’t a very strong swimmer.” She said to Kate. She blushed red.
“So how are we going to see if it’s clean,” asked Kara, and when she said the word clean, it was as if she had put quotation marks around the word.
“Well, we’ll see what lives in it,” she said. “If you see a stonefly or a mayfly, the water is unpolluted, whereas if you see leeches, worms and fly larvae, swimming in the water, it’s not safe to drink,” said Isabella explaining.
“How do you know?” I asked.
“My mother and father sent me to a nature club, thinking that I will enjoy myself, but I’ve hated it. I didn’t know that the facts will actually help me later on in life. I liked watching the animals in the wild but I hated learning about plants and insects,” She said. “I can see six stoneflies and two mayflies. The water is clean.” She announced, and as she did, we all cupped our hands and bent over to the lake. As soon as I bent down, I heard a crunch sound. I reluctantly patted the place the sound had come from. I soon found that is was the envelope that Isabella had given to me. I was so thirsty that I didn’t bother to open it to see what was inside.
