Chapter 19: A Flashback of Events

In the month before Dorothanna had arrived in Oz, a lot had happened. The day after Doctor Dillamond's death, Galinda and Elphaba left for the Emerald City. At the funeral ceremony, Fiyero privately approached Elphaba, the same stupid grin plastered on his face as from the night before.

"Miss Elphaba"

"Master Fiyero"

"I heard you were traveling to the Emerald City today."

"Indeed I am."

"And a litter birdy, a green birdy, shall we say, told me you'd not be returning to Shiz. How unfortunate that'd be."

"I suppose so, yes." they laughed.

"But- I came to ask for permission to accompany you." he questioned. Elphaba's eyes widened.

"Really? Yero you'd do that for me?" she said, forgetting she wasn't supposed to be with him.

"Of course, my Fae." and so it was that Fiyero accompanied the the pink and green to the glorious Emerald City. When they arrived, the three students were escorted to see the Wizard, who refused to show his face. In place of where he should have been, a skeletal face sat above the chair, its loud voice echoing through the walls of the green palace. Galinda and Fiyero both were awed at the beauty of the place, but Elphaba was on a mission.

"Your highness, my name is Miss Elphaba, the Thropp Third Descending, of Nest Hardings." she declared. She then proceeded to protest against the mistreatment of Animals, especially Doctor Dillamond. The Wizard denied any possibility of murdering Animals, or hurting them in any way, and Elphaba was infuriated. She stormed out of the room and out to the cabbie, Galinda and Fiyero rushing after her. After she calmed her down, Galinda persuaded Elphaba to go shopping, and they had a good rest of the day. That is, until they were walking through the streets, when they heard a booming voice.

"Miss Elphaba of Nest Hardings, the Wizard has asked to see you." Guards rushed all around Galinda and Elphie, and they were taken back to the Wizard, Fiyero running to catch up to them. This time, he showed himself. He was a stout man, balding, and he wore a sickening smile on his face.

"Ah Miss Elphaba, and friends."

"What do you want?" She said defiantly.

"Well, I was impressed with your determination to come and find me this morning, and I understand you're quite talented in sorcery. I have a favor to ask of you."

"Yes?"

"I'm running an experiment. I want to see if animals, not Animals, can fly. Non-flying animals I mean. Such as monkeys."

"Monkeys? And what do you hope to accomplish?"

"That's for me to decide, isn't it?" Elphaba rolled her eyes.

"What do I have to do with this?" The Wizard laughed.

"You my dear, need to make a monkey fly."

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

"Go on Elphie, you can do it." urged Galinda. A couple of guards brought in a small ape barely 3 feet tall. Elphaba was confused. Why did she have to do this? She didn't want to, but she had to obey the Wizard. She approached the little monkey and concentrated, but instead of flying, the monkey sprouted huge, grotesque, vicious looking wings. The poor animal was freaked out. He flailed and shrieked.

"Elphaba! I asked you to get it to fly! Not scare the shit out of the poor thing! Look! You've made it into a monster!" But Elphaba hadn't meant to do anything to it.

"I'm sorry.... I-I didn't mean to!" She pleaded.

"Try again." So another monkey was brought out and the same thing happened. And again, and again, and again. Soon an army of winged monkeys flooded the room. Elphaba soon realized that he had intended to make her look bad all along.

"You monster! How could you? You're truly Wicked, Miss Elphaba! How can you come to me, trying to rescue Animals, when you do this to poor, innocent monkeys? The poor creatures. You're Wicked. A Wicked Witch, you are." The Wizard sent the guards after her, but she ran, Galinda right behind her. Once they were safe, they stopped.

"Elphie, we have got to run away!" She screamed.

"No Galinda, I'm running away, like I said. I should have known this would happen." She shook her head. "You need to stay here in Oz."

"What? No. Come on Elphie."

"No Galinda, it's too dangerous. Please. If they find me, I'll be jailed or killed. I can't let them do that to you." Elphaba hugged her friend.

"I'll write you. I promise." The two friends held each other tight and then Galinda left reluctantly. Slowly and carefully, Elphaba snuck back to the city to find Fiyero, in the spot they had planned to meet. Her lover then took her to his castle in the Vinkus, where they were to hide. As soon as she could, she wrote Galinda. Galinda explained to Elphie through letter how she'd gone back to Shiz and things were more normal. She'd started to get better at sorcery, and even let Boq take her out on a date. She also said she'd lost Fiyero in the Emerald City, but she didn't care. Things were starting to get better, and all was good. That is, until one day when Galinda was visiting Munchkinland for the day, when she saw a girl with red braids, and a little dog. Galinda immediately recognized her as Anna. She went back to Shiz and wrote to Elsa. when Elsa received the message, she panicked. She went outside and walked towards Oz, and when she reached the border of Corona, began to formulate a massive storm. The blizzard lasted longest in the Vinkus, which was closest to Corona. Elphaba knew the storm had been caused by Elsa, and since she had no reason to be outside, and she was safer inside, she and Fiyero spent the time by eating, sleeping, and having sex. When the storm reached the Emerald City, all of Oz knew poor Elphaba as the Wicked Witch, but the storm was so tremendous that it blew the Wizard away in his hot air balloon. No one was there to witness him disappear, so because Elphaba was the last one to actually see him, they accused her of his murder and named her the Wicked Witch of the West, Upon hearing the news, Elphaba was devastated. She'd never meant to do any harm to anyone. Before the storm had even started, she had snuck out to visit her sister, Nessarose, in Munchkinkland. Instead she found her good friend Boq, crippled on the floor. Nessa had taken out his heart, from the looks of it. That made her Wicked, not Elphie. She remembered having no choice but to turn Boq into a tin man to save him, but when he was alive again, he blamed her for his murder. Why was everyone so against her? She didn't know. In the meantime, everything was awry elsewhere. Classes are Shiz were dismissed early for the year in all the chaos, and Oz was without a leader. That is, until Galinda took over. Everyone assumed she had helped rid Oz of the Wicked Witch, and appointed her Glinda the Good, which Galinda was infuriated with because that was NOT her name. When Elsa received this news, she was ecstatic. She was so proud of her best friend. She also assumed that Anna had probably gone back to Arendelle by now, so the snow queen ceased the storm. However, as the snow settled, a final gust of wind hurtled through Oz, creating tornadoes everywhere. Houses and other buildings whipped around, causing major destruction. At the last few seconds of the final tornado, a house fell loudly in Munchkinland, crushing Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba's sister. Elsa didn't know she'd caused a death, and neither did anyone else, that is, until Dorothanna arrived and found those ruby slippers.
