"How did you come here? And when? I strictly asked you to stay in that room, didn't I?" Nick lashed out at me, standing up from his position. I noticed he was wearing his armor now.
"I was in the room, until I heard someone in the broom closet. As soon as I turn the door knob, I was instead pulled in it and blacked out. The next I woke up, I was in the church!" I hastily explained, uncomfortable of the background noises. There were screaming of people, but from where we stood on the hill, I couldn't see anyone or anything. The old church was still burning in front of us.
"They're here. The demons are here!" Nick turned around and ran at the edge of the hill, looking over the town. The church was the only building that was on the hills. It stood alone, now burning in the solemnity of the place. But my mind was frozen by what I had just heard.
"How do you know? The people can't be shouting because of it, can they? Our town is bewitched! The demons can't see it. They can only see the church because it's here on the hills!" I sensibly said and went to stand near Nick to see what was going on. Half of the crowd of angels was running in the direction of the hill to move past it. The battlefield was on the other side of the hill we were standing on. The other half of the crowd was screaming, looking at the church burning and crying at the loss of their holy place.
"Listen, Aileen! The King wanted to talk to you, right before we'd done our work but now I reckon he wouldn't be able to! I want you to listen to me carefully, okay? Are you listening?" Nick firmly held me by my shoulders and shook me, talking to me. I blinked my eyes several times to move past my shock of the moment and nodded my head.
This was it. I had to do this.
"You're not fighting in the war. You can't." Nick slowly said the words that made no sense to me.
"What?"
"Yes,"
"Are you mad? The King himself told me on the day of my arrival that I - the nephilim is the key to win this war. How can you not let me fight?" I screeched, my insides twitching.
"Yes, that's right. You're the key because you're the anchor."
My mind opened and I suddenly remembered what Forneous said to me inside the church about me being the anchor.
"So it's true. What Forneous was saying is true. I'm going to be the anchor for hundreds of lives fighting in the battlefield." I spoke, as if in a trance- without showing any emotions.
"Yes, Aileen. Only you are capable of it. We are going to win this war because of you. Do you understand what you've to do?"
I nodded my head, shakily.
"If you die or get hurt severely, so do several others. So, whatever happens, don't let yourself get in impossible situations during the war."
I wobbled my head this time, assuring him I had understood.
"Good. Let's go now."
We started walking down the hill. The rocky path was making it harder for us to travel and that's when I flew up, signalling Nick to do the same.
"No. Save it. Save your energy for the battle." Nick howled and an expression of realization dawned upon me as I landed. In minutes, we reached the town, watching hundreds of people running blindly towards the other side of the hill. The other half were now running up the hill, wanting to shut out the fire.
"Come on!" I let Nick drag me with the people wanting to reach the battlefield. I saw faces...faces of people who were angry, patriotic and determined. They all wanted to fight back, no one was cowering away. I had made up my mind as to not give up until the very end. We had to win this battle.
And just when I thought my legs couldn't take more of this running, we stopped running. We had reached the field, its soil scarlet red which caught my attention. I wondered if the soil was soaked in blood of all those angels who died on this field. The angry shrieks, the painful screams, the clinking of the swords, the swishes of the magic spells, the energy of bewitchment could be all felt in the air. My head jerked backwards and all I saw was the same field for thousands of miles. I couldn't see the town anymore. There stood just a hill some yards away, the church burning upon it. I stared towards the front again as Nick chanted a spell and my body got covered with an armor. I could feel my sword inside it and that made me feel powerful and secured. I couldn't see the demons, only a thousand angels moving forward with their own swords.
