You might have recently seen his story: Dark Tidings, was on the first page of Fantasy, and second of Adventure. It might even still be. I cannot wait to start reading his story, and it looks interesting. Ken has agreed to let me interview him. Why not start reading his story to get a good look at what first-page and second-page material looks like!
THE INTERVIEW
Before we start, I’d like to thank TheConrellClan for giving me this opportunity to talk about myself... deep down,we all like talking about ourselves!
What made you join Wattpad?
A lot of reasons.
1. I wanted more people to read my books. I’ve published the whole of book one, Dark Tidings, here on Wattpad and I’m hoping that some readers will enjoy it so much that they’ll want to read the rest of the series.
2. I wanted to get feedback. Some Wattpadders are brilliant with their comments and a lot of them are very helpful. I know it’ll make me write better stories if I take on board all, well most of, the suggestions. I try and reply to every comment... if someone has taken the time to comment, then I think I should take the time to respond.
3. I wanted to discover new writers and enjoy a wealth of different stories. The more I read, the better a writer I’ll become.
Who do you thank most here on Wattpad, for helping you?
There are too many people to mention them all, so let me say a big thank you to everyone who’s supported me... they know who they are.
I will however single out @wuckster. He read the whole of Dark Tidings and left hilarious and helpful comments all the way through. He even gave me a great phase which I incorporated into the story.
Thanks again, Wuckster.
What is your favourite book on Wattpad (Other than your own)?
When @wuckster started commenting on Dark Tidings, I checked out his work and discovered Tourist Trap. If you like your stories weird and funny, this is the one for you... stories don’t get much weirder or funnier. So pop on your holiday clothes and check it out... http://www.wattpad.com/story/8397124-tourist-trap
What is your favourite of your own books?
I love A Darker Shade of Black, it’s the final book in my ‘ancient magic meets the Internet’ trilogy.
I think my writing style has improved over the years so I guess I'm bound to think my latest book is my best book. I'm still very fond of Dark Tidings, it will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my first book and it introduced me to the wonderful world of writing.
Do you have any ideas for a next novel? And, if so, can you give us a sneak peek?
My next book is a complete change of genre. To date I've written funny fantasies.
The new book is called Bangkok Rot and it’s a gritty yet humorous thriller. I wrote about 30,000 words of it for the 2013 Nanowrimo event and I plan to finish it in the next couple of months.
Sneak peek? Okay, here are the first few paragraphs...
_________
I'm sitting in a barroom in Chicago… I wish. Actually, I'm shivering on a stone floor in a prison cell in Thailand.
Bang Kwang prison in Bangkok to be precise. The Bangkok Hilton.
My trial’s over and they found me guilty. My defence council tells me there’s no appeal process, although I’m pretty sure he’s lying.
I think he believes I did the crime and in his mind westerners deserve to be punished when they break the law in the ‘Land of the Free’ as he likes to call this country. ‘Land of the Free’?
I’d always thought that was America… and I wish I was there now. Maybe in a honky in Chicago, drinking wine, being free.
They sentence me in a week’s time. I’m expecting the death penalty.
A month ago my life had been normal; normal and boring. What I’d give now for normal and boring.
________________
Last, but not least, who is your idol, as an author?
Terry Pratchett, without a doubt.
I love his Discworld series and anyone who’s read any of them will probably spot Sir Terry’s influence in my writing style.
Okay, that’s it. Thanks again for the opportunity to chat.
Thank you, KenMagee, for taking part in this interview!
