The streets were rowdy, the air filled with the neighs of horses and the chattering of people. The sun blazed down on dusty, sandy streets and burned on the backs of the people that bustled through.
A young woman stepped out of the bank, clutching a small package tightly to her chest. She looked down at it, smiling broadly before hopping down the steps and making her way to the post where her horse was tied.
"Molly!" A voice called behind her. The young woman, Molly, turned around to see the face of an excited young woman. She stumbled quickly down the steps, practically tripping over her dress, clutching her hat tightly to her head.
"Hello, Mary," Molly said, her eyebrows raised as the blonde-haired woman bent down to catch her breath, "what in the world are you doing?"
Mary snapped up, smiling giddily, "well, dear, I saw you in the bank and I hardly recognized you in that gorgeous outfit but anyway I was wondering if you'd like to join John and I for dinner tonight." Molly blinked as the charming woman chattered without pausing for a breath, giving her a wary smile.
"Oh I'm sorry, Mary. I'd love to but unfortunately I must stay at home tonight. I'm traveling tomorrow and have to get ready." Molly almost immediately regretted mentioning the trip when her friend gasped loudly, a few people casting curious glances towards the two.
"A trip? Exciting! But where in the world would you be wanting to go other than this lovely town! Unless," Mary lowered her voice, a sly grin upon her lips, "you're visiting a secret lover."
Molly rolled her eyes, "no, not quite as exciting as that. I'm visiting my family, Mary dear. They don't live quite as near as I'd have hoped."
Mary nodded solemnly. She opened her mouth to speak but was cut off when bells rang throughout the town, chiming loudly. Mary gasped.
"Golly! Is it that late already? Boy, I'd better be getting home, John will be coming home from work soon! It was wonderful to see you again Molly, have fun on your trip!"
Molly began to say goodbye but Mary was already off. She smiled softly and hoisted herself up onto her horse, silently cursing the decision to ride Dove while in the silly dress. She squirmed as she readied herself side saddle, at least until she was away from town, and began to trot Dove.
As she passed, however, a dark figure caught her eye. They were leaned against a building, half hidden in the shadows, but she managed to catch a glimpse of icy blue eyes that watched her carefully. Molly quickly looked away, though the image of the eyes still haunted her. Shaking the feeling off she snapped Dove's reins and, going as quickly as she could riding side saddle, led Dove out of town.
Once the cluster of buildings was left in the distance, Molly heaved a sigh of relief and situated herself normally, doing her best to ignore the pain that bloomed in her back from the awkward positioning. Molly steered Dove along an unpaved road that was carved along a steep incline, a hill that could have very well passed as a mountain.
She was slowing Dove down considerably, letting the horse become accustomed to the rough terrain, when she heard the hoofsteps. Molly peeked behind her shoulder and saw two male figures trotting a distance behind her, their faces hidden under large hats. Molly blinked, feeling excitement bubble inside of her. They were cowboys!
She had never really met one in person, just recognized their unusual outfits and sleek but obviously very well trained horses. Molly slowed Dove down even more, letting the cowboys catch up to her.
