The moon shone up ahead, illuminating among the plethora of stars that littered the sky. Against the indigo heavens the dark shape of a castle was outlined, small lights flickering out the windows and music drifting up, smooth and beautiful. In one of the unlit rooms a girl stood on the balcony, humming along to the waltzes playing downstairs.
She gave a content sigh and drifted into the room, waltzing to the music by herself, her dress swirling around. She didn't bother to light a candle, the moon's silvery light was enough for her to see.
Suddenly, a rustling sounded outside. The girl hesitantly began to make her way to the balcony when a hand suddenly grasped the thick wall. The girl let out a quiet gasp and stumbled back, pressing against the wall to be out of view from the intruder.
She gave a shuddering breath as she listened to the intruder grunt, undoubtedly pulling themselves up onto the balcony. The girl's hand rummaged through the darkness, grasping onto the neck of a candlestick. She raised it above her head as the footsteps of the intruder became louder.
The dark figure stepped into the room and the girl brought down the candlestick. However, with almost impossibly quick reflexes the intruder whipped around, catching her wrist.
"Hello there," his voice was silky and the girl could make out two impossibly blue eyes piercing her through the darkness.
The girl let out a small gasp and stumbled back, wrenching her hands out of the intruders grasp. She made towards the door but he grabbed her arm once more.
"Tut tut now, let's not do that," he spun her around and grasped the girl's arms tightly, restraining her from escaped, "that would be most unfortunate for both of us... your highness?" His voice seemed surprised at that last part. The girl stood up straighter, lifting her chin to meet the intruders cerulean stare.
"Princess Molly- now let me go!" The intruder stared at Molly for a moment before shrugging and letting her go. Molly looked towards the door but paused, instead going to light a candle.
"My name is Sherlock, princessa," the intruder rumbled, his tone mocking at the last word, "and I do apologize. I thought this room was unoccupied."
"Why do you think I should care," the princess snapped back, shaking out the match as the candlelight flooded the room.
"Considering you haven't made a run to warn the guards and instead have lit a candle I believe you must have taken an interest in me." Sherlock raised an eyebrow at Molly, amusement written across his face.
The princess crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes at Sherlock. "It's not that I'm curious, but do you have plans to harm me?"
"Not in the slightest."
"Then what's the point in calling the guards?" The princess shrugged, taking in the view of the intruder whose amused gaze had turned to a curious sort of shock.
"Yes I suppose that's one way to think of it," his chin tipped up slightly, as if he was still considering the princess's words.
"Though do tell, what are you doing here?"
Sherlock grinned, taking a step back and holding his arms out, "can't you tell, I'm a thief!"
Molly looked at him and blinked, raising an eyebrow. Sherlock was clad in a gentleman's suit, not exactly the proper attire for a thief.
"You sure aren't dressed for the part," Molly said. Sherlock's grin widened.
"Well that's because I'm not like most thieves."
"How so?"
"For one I have come empty handed- there's not a weapon on my body. Two, I'm not planning a massive heist, I just want a few candlesticks. Three, I dared to come into the princessa's bedroom for my steal, and on the night of the ball too. Though I suppose this has backfired on me."
Molly nodded knowingly, "yes, I suppose it has. Why do you want only a few candlesticks?"
Sherlock paused, considering this. "Well, I only want enough to provide me with food for what I assume is the rest of the month." Molly raised an eyebrow.
"So what are you; some sort of... dapper thief?"
Sherlock grinned, running a hand down the sleeve of his coat. "Dapper thief..." he mused, "yes I quite like the sound of that."
There was a silence as they stared at each other, Molly's eyes narrowed and Sherlock's amused.
"So what do you plan on doing now?" Molly finally asked, breaking away from Sherlock's gaze. He paused, letting his eyes rake across the room.
"Well I suppose I'll take my candlesticks and leave."
"And what makes you think I'll let you do that?"
Sherlock grinned, shrugging. "I haven't the slightest idea. But will you?"
Molly paused, staring at him with narrowed eyes for a moment. She sighed and rolled her eyes, "yes, I suppose you can have some candlesticks."
Sherlock nodded triumphantly, sweeping past Molly to collect his steal. "You know," he said as he swiped a few candlesticks, "you aren't like most girls." He paused, "well quite frankly you aren't like any girl."
Molly shrugged, watching him carefully, "is that a compliment?"
Sherlock grinned at her, "definitely." He came to the last candle he decided he would take, the only lit one in the room. He stared at its flickering flame for a moment, watching the fire dance before his eyes. Finally he blew it out, submerging the two into a moonlit darkness once more.
Sherlock grabbed the candlestick and began to make his way back towards the balcony, but not before Molly grabbed his wrist.
"Are you just leaving?" She asked, an eyebrow raised. Sherlock flashed her a smirk.
"Enjoying my company?"
A sort of sadness flicked over Molly's face, though it was soon gone, replaced by a calmness. "Yes, apparently so."
Sherlock studied the princess for a moment, assessing her pale features that glowed in the moonlight with a deep intensity. "Well, I'll be back for more candlesticks soon."
Molly grinned softly, "alright. I'll be waiting."
Sherlock softly took Molly's hand, raising it to his lips and smirking when they softly brushed her knuckles. "Until then, princessa."
With that Sherlock disappeared over the edge of the balcony, leaving a doe-eyed Molly staring at the place where he had been with a soft blush.
"Until then," she whispered into the darkness, raising her hand to her chest and smiling softly, her mind occupied with thoughts of her dapper thief.
