-  2 Years Earlier -

Nia sat in the mess hall, her head buried in her hands to try and drown out the dreadfully boring conversation her parents were having with their friends. She looked up when her mother had nudged her arm, "you've got to eat." she told the young girl sternly.

"I'm not even hungry." Nia groaned, she received a warning look from her mother. "Fine." she mumbled, picking up her fork and twirling it around on her plate. Her parents friends were sat across from them, with a knowing smile on their faces at the teenage girl.

"Charlotte's the same." The man, Andrew, chuckled as he forked some food into his mouth. The blonde girl sat beside him grumbled in protest.

"She's 10 going on 20." Andrew's wife laughed, playfully putting her arm around her daughter who failed at trying to hide her smile.

"I remember when Nia was 10, god how time goes so quick." Nia's mother sighed, gazing at her daughter lovingly while tucking a strand of hair behind the young girl's ear.

"Mom.." The brunette complained, rolling her eyes in embarrassment. The little girl opposite her giggled at the interaction. "Parents, who'd have them." Nia whispered jokingly to Charlotte, who grinned widely.

- Present Time -

Clarke stood beside Jasper's body, glancing at her watch worriedly. "What's wrong?" Nia asked her.

"His pulse is three eighty." She shook her head, disappointed at herself for being so helpless.

"Go back to sleep!"

"Quiet!" Nia tensed her jaw in anger at the constant complaints from the delinquents over the course of the past 6 hours. She got up and stormed over to the hatch so she could climb down and give them all a piece of her mind.

"Nia, don't." Clarke quietly called out to her, causing the brunette to huff and turn around. "They aren't worth it." She smiled softly at the girl as she went back to her previous position beside Jasper, and carried on wiping the sweat off his forehead. "Don't listen to them. You're gonna make it through this, okay? Promise." Clarke spoke to Jasper, her hand moving his hair away from his forehead. The boy let out another painful groan.

"Can he just die already?"

Nia grew increasingly frustrated and decided she needed a break from having to deal with the complaints below her. "I'm gonna get some more clean water." She informed Clarke, standing back up and exiting the drop ship.

As she arrived at the place where the camp stored all their water, Nia jumped when she heard the sound of a girl screaming. She dropped her bottle and ran over to where the sound came from. Her footsteps halted when she saw a young girl, no older than 12, shrieking and writhing in her sleep.

"Hey," Nia whispered as she gently shook the girls shoulder, "you're okay." The girl shot up, her eyes wide with panic, as her chest heaved  with heavy breaths. It took Nia a second to realise that she had met this girl before on the Ark. "Charlotte, you're safe." She reassured the girl as she frantically looked around her.

The girl lurched forward and pulled the older one into a hug. Nia rubbed her hands around Charlotte's back in an attempt to soothe her, her shoulder slowly became wet from the young girl's tears. After a few minutes, she pulled back and rubbed her eyes.

"You wanna talk about it?" Nia asked after she let Charlotte have a few minutes to compose herself.

"It's my parents. They were floated and I see it in my dreams." She spoke shakily, fresh tears falling down her face.
