"Come on Mackenzie. We need to get to the dress shop in 30 minutes." Amaya tugs on my arm and pulls me down the hallway.
It is finally prom season at our school. Amaya has been hanging out with me more than usual and Levi still hasn't been talking to me. Although, he gives me glares from time to time since I have been hanging out with Amaya recently. I guess that is good.
Even though I was getting glances from him, I still can't stomach the fact that Delilah and Levi are "dating".
The reason I say dating in quotation marks is because Delilah treats Levi like they are dating, however, Levi just ignores the behavior. It is like he is not acknowledging it but, not disliking it. Wondering what Levi thinks of Delilah and how she can be so close to him drives me insane.
I wrote this feeling down in my journal; Amaya identified it as jealousy and confusion.
Levi and Delilah are going to prom; Amaya and I are going to prom together as friends. For college, Julian had to leave early and go north to get some things together. He will attend John Hopkins University on a full scholarship. Julian wants to be a dentist. Apparently, he wouldn't be back until after prom.
"Hold on Amaya! I can't run that fast and I sure can't handle you pulling me like this." I pant. I can't compete with Amaya's athletic prowess.
"Oh come on Mackenzie. I am not even running that fast. My cousin who works at the dress shop can only give us the discount when she is there. If we don't hurry she will leave her shift at 4." She quickly tells me before we pass Levi and Delilah who stood there talking.
Amaya stops and drops my arm," Hey Levi. Hey Delilah. Want to come with us to the dress shop my cousin works at to get our outfits for prom?"
I glanced at Levi whose face was unreadable. Delilah however made a face at me like I was some smelly cheese.
" No thanks, Ams. We got our outfits already. Surely prom queen and king worthy." Delilah smiles and hugs on to Levi's arm. He does nothing to stop her which leads me to have a pang in my heart. One of hurt and pain.
For one second, Levi's eyes meet mine. He quickly glances away afterward," Yeah Ams we got our outfits already. No need."
I can't tear my eyes away from him. The one I love is ignoring me. I wonder if this whole plan to confess to him at prom will come through in my favor.
Amaya shrugs," Ok then. Your loss. Come on Mackenzie." She grabs my arm and pulls me down the hallway once again.
😐😊😶
"This dress shop is huge Amaya!" I exclaim. It would be any paradise for a girl who loves dresses. Dresses for every occasion were everywhere. Short dresses, long dresses, weird dresses, casual dresses, elegant dresses, and the one I like ball gown dresses.
Amaya giggles a bit," Yeah I know. That is why I came here. They have so many options."
Not after Amaya says that a girl with black hair with some blonde highlights jogs towards us. She looks like she is in her early twenties and wears all black, which I assume is a work outfit. The girl looks like she is related to Amaya; probably the cousin Amaya was talking about.
"Hey, little cuz! You came just in time. I was about to end my shift," the girl says while hugging Amaya then looking at me," You must be the friend Ams here was talking about. My name is Avalie but, you can call me Ava. Nice to meet you." She puts her hand out for me to shake, which I do.
"Hi, Ava. My name is Mackenzie and I prefer to be referred to by that name. I am weird I know." I return a smile. Ava raises an eyebrow in confusion.
"Ok. Well, now that we have introductions out of the way, we need to find a dress for Mackenzie here. She needs to wow someone at prom." Amaya takes my shoulders and pushes me to pass Ava.
"And who might that be?" Ava asks jogging to keep up with me and Amaya.
Amaya takes a quick glance at me. She wants me to tell Ava.
Amaya stops pushing me and we end up in front of the dressing room. Ava catches up and coming in front of us.
"A boy that showed me the world I never knew and helped me understand my feelings. I ruined things when I couldn't respond to his feelings. I want to let him know how much I love him and appreciate him in my life." I smile a bit at the thought of Levi. I don't want to lose him. He has helped me so much.
"Ok then. I know exactly what I can put you in. I think you will like it. Plus it should fit you and on sale. Be right back." Ava says before walking away from us.
Amaya lightly pats me on the shoulder," That was so sweet, Mackenzie. I have no doubt that Ava will pick something nice out for you."
"Yeah....sure."
Amaya and I look around for some dresses that she could wear. So far we came across this black A-line dress with silver sequins arranged as a heart on the bodice. Amaya was really excited to put it on, so she rushed into the dressing room with me following behind.
She came out looking stunning. The dress fits her perfectly and hugs her figure nicely.
"This dress is made for you Amaya. I like it on you."
"You really think so." She twirls in it, getting a feel for it.
"Yeah. Totally." I give her a reassuring smile.
Ava rushes in with a dress on her back," I found it! It took awhile but, I finally found it!" She takes it off her back and shows me the dress.
It was absolutely beautiful! The dress was dusty pink with layers, chiffon at the bottom, and an intricate gold design on the bodice. More importantly, it was a nice ball gown. Not too big, not too small, it was perfect.
I take the dress and tried it on. The fit was amazing and it hugged my figure nicely. I went to show Ava and Amaya. They both agree with their facial expressions.
"It seems by that face you are giving me, that I strike gold. I knew you would love it. It is pretty isn't it?" She smiles.
I look up from the dress to her and back to the dress in a daze," Are you kidding me? It is beautiful! It is like it is made for me. I am so....so....so happy." I exclaim.
I remember Levi and how he made me smile. I can only imagine how will he look when he sees me.
"You are in luck. This dress comes with a mask and discounted shoes." Ava takes out a little iPad and starts tapping away.
Amaya comes closer to me and puts her arms around me," She will take it."
"Ok. Then its a sale. I will discount the 40%. Trust me Mackenzie, the boy you want to impress, his jaw will drop to the floor when he sees you." Ava smiles.
